Reps in special session, mourn massacred Yobe students

Emotion overwhelmed the House of Representatives yesterday as members were brought to the point of tears on a day the House declared a day of mourning for the 59 slain students of the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State.
Speaker Aminu Tambuwal declared it as a day of infamy as he took members on an imaginary journey on what happened to the students on that fateful night of February 25.
“My dear colleagues, please travel with me on an imaginary journey to Federal Government College, Buni Yadi.
“Picture the scene as the terrorists creep into the hostels and the children begin to wake up one after the other, with their eyes heavy with sleep, each of them convinced that this is some nightmare.

“Picture the chaos in the rooms and the terror on the faces of the children as they watch the murderers attack the first set of students, the ones nearest to the entrance, and the students begin to realise that what is happening is not a nightmare but a reality far harsher than any nightmare the mind of a child can construct.”
Yesterday’s session began when the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola moved that “this House do hold a Special Session to deliberate on the incessant killings and maiming of people and residents of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States by the Boko Haram insurgents.”
The motion, which was seconded by Hon. Friday Itulah (Edo, PDP) then paved way for the  speaker.
In a moving speech, the speaker, while commending the various Committees which have been working assiduously on the budget, said that welcoming back members was rather on a sad note to him. He condemned the brutish killing of  the “ innocent” students and other victims, saying that it was on that note that the House had to dedicate the day to mourn the departed.

Help! Goodness needs N3.4m for an anus

Imagine a life without an anus. Imagine your baby excreting faeces from her mouth. Imagine having to be abandoned by your spouse when you needed him or her most. Imagine accessing care and you were told that your hospital file is no where to be found? These aptly described the present challenges confronting Mrs. Florence Nkemachor Edokpayi and her four year-old child, Goodness Edokpayi.
Goodness, according to a medical report from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital,LASUTH and signed by a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Dr. O. Faboya requires urgent assistance for further medical attention after undergone three operations already.
*Master Goodness
*Master Goodness
Goodness is said to have been born with Down syndrome with delayed passage of meconium and further medical investigation revealed that she has Hirschsprungs disease.
Unfortunately, the defective intestine had made it impossible such that he could not pass faeces normally through the anus.
However, after due consultation with two hospitals abroad, BLK Super Specialty Hospital, India and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London had both reviewed the case and said they were capable of carrying out the operations.  Now, Goodness needs a total of N3.4 million ($20,000) for the life – saving operations and the associated expenses. Unfortunately, Florence is now running from pillar to post as she cannot afford the sum.
Narrating her ordeal to Vanguard, Florence said few days after Goodness was born, his tummy was swelling as he could not excrete like normal babies. And it got to a point that faeces was coming out of his mouth.
Then, her mother Florence rushed him to LASUTH where it was discovered that he has a defective intestine that could not allow him pass faeces through the anus.
Medical doctors at the hospital in the battle to save his life carried out what they called, “A Martin-Duhamel pull over” through surgery when he was one year old. Later, there was post operative complication which required re-operation.
At age three and half, he had colo-anal astomosis done.  Since then, the baby has undergone three operations without the doctors being able to correct the abnormality.
To add salt to injury, the last time they went to the hospital in October, the mother was told that the baby’s medical file and records has gone missing and as such they could not do anything and were sent home without any hope or help.
As if these were not enough, Mr. Kingsley Edokpayi the supposed father of Goodness, upon discovery of these abnormalities in his boy abandoned his wife and child to their fate. Since then, he never cared or asked after their welfare.
Right now, Florence has been catering for herself and the baby by selling telephone recharge cards and from little financial assistance she gets from relatives.
Florence  who said all the efforts of the doctors have not  solve her child’s problem, appealed to well meaning Nigerians to help her child.

Don’t divide Nigeria along religious, ethnic lines, Buhari warns

Former military Head of State and All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain, General Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned Nigerians to be wary of those he claimed are desperate to divide the country along ethnic and religious lines for their selfish purposes.
Affirming that Nigerians were generally united by common issues and challenges, Buhari in a statement said he was on his part determined not to surrender to the manipulations of those he claimed were mostly in the ruling class.
Buhar
Buhari
The statement posted on his facebook page on Tuesday night had as at press time yesterday attracted 626 likes and 263 comments, mostly supportive from friends. While supportive, there were some, however, which said support for his comment did not mean backing a presidential bid by the former head of state.
Vowing not to surrender to zealots, Buhari said:
“As Nigerians, we must work together and support each other because the challenges we face are similar: rampant corruption, incompetent leadership, and the threat of insecurity.”
“We therefore share common goals, hopes and aspirations – for a new Nigeria that is free, secure and prosperous. As a result, we also share a common enemy; the predatory class of vested interests who want to sustain the status quo and perpetuate their monumental misrule.”
“It is for this reason that they create an artificial North-South, Christian-Muslim divide, chanting jingoistic slogans with the hope that we would goose-step in formation, ready to tear each other apart while they busy themselves plundering our commonwealth and betraying our collective destiny.”
“It is therefore left to us to decide whether we will allow them perfect this betrayal by acting as mercenary-collaborators in the destruction of our country, or organize collectively to rescue our fatherland from their murderous grip.”
“Do not be deceived, dear friends; there is only one Nigeria, and one single struggle; which is to reclaim the destiny of this country and shape it to suit our present realities and future aspirations. And on this, there is no quitting, no giving up and no surrendering! Keep up the hope, Nigeria shall be great again!”

2nd Niger Bridge: Importers laud FG for choosing Julius Berger

Importers in Nigeria have commended the Federal Government for choosing Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to execute the Second Niger Bridge project.
The importers, acting under the aegis of Nigerian Importers Association, NIA, expressed optimism that with Julius Berger, the contract would be executed according to specifications and within the time frame.
Chairman of the association, Chief Gilbert Bravo Obi, who stated this, yesterday, in Onitsha, Anambra State, while speaking to newsmen, in reaction to last Monday’s flag-off of the project by President Goodluck Jonathan, lauded the Federal Government for taking the bull by the horn.

Battle to recall suspended UNN pro-chancellor now in high court

The battle for the recall of the suspended Pro-Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Dr. Emeka Enejere, has shifted to the Federal High Court, Abuja, today, following a suit filed by the Alumni Association of the university.
Joined in the court action are the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Ajoke, SAN, the Governing Council of the University, and Mr. Emmanuel Ukala, who was named as new Pro-Chancellor.
Others are the National Universities Commission, NUC, UNN’s Registrar, Mr. Anthony Okonta, and the suspended Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Enejere.
The plaintiffs are praying the court to set aside the suspension of Dr. Enejere, whom they claim was the person who was properly appointed as the Pro-Chancellor, according to the UNN Act.
They also prayed the court to stop Mr. Ukala from parading himself as the new Pro-Chancellor on the grounds that his appointment by the Supervisory Minister of Education, Wike, did not conform with the law regulating the university.
According to the plaintiffs, only the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, as the Visitor to the University, had the power to appoint the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.
They further contend that it was President Jonathan who appointed Dr Enejere and had not removed him, and therefore his suspension by Mr. Wike and his replacement with Mr Ukala were both wrong. According to them, only President Jonathan has the power to carry out any of the two functions.

Police release images of men who boarded Malaysian Airline with stolen passport

Malaysian Police have released images of the two men who boarded the missing Malaysia Airlines flight with stolen passports but say one of the men, 19-year-old Iranian Pouria Nur Mohammad Mehrdad, (pictured left) is known to them and they do not think he is a terrorist.

The police say the teenager is an Iranian asylum seeker on his way to Germany

Malaysian police say the identity of the other man is still under investigation and no longer strongly believes that the missing plane was attacked by terrorists. They say are now looking into four main areas: sabotage, hijacking or psychological problems among either the crew or the passengers.

Phones of passengers on missing plane still ringing, relatives claim

This Malaysian plane disappearance has to be the most mysterious incident that has happened in recent history. Late yesterday, relatives of some of the passengers on board the vanished aircraft who are lodged in a hotel, claimed they were still able to call the cellphones of their missing loved ones.

Washington Post reports that some relatives said that they were getting ring tones and could see them active online through a Chinese instant messenger service called QQ. One man in particular claimed he could see that the QQ account of his brother-in-law showed him as online, but when he sends a message, he gets no reply. The calls have also not been picked up. This is scary!

Anti-gay law: Okogie, Osa-Oni blast Western nations

ARCHBISHOP Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, and founder of Vineyard Christian Centre, Lagos, Archbishop John Osa-Oni, have sent a strong warning to the United States of America and its Western allies to desist from pressurising Nigerian government to soft pedal on its current anti-gay stands, vowing that no amount of intimidation would make the nation succumb to their whims and caprices.
Speaking at different occasions in the wake of pressures on President Goodluck Jonathan by officials of the US and other international human rights groups to have a rethink on the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act recently passed by the National Assembly and dully signed into law by the president, the duo cautioned them to mind their business and stop meddling into the nation’s domestic affairs.
Addressing newsmen in Lagos ahead of a world leadership conference of end-time generals scheduled to take place at the Guiding Light Assembly from Thursday,  March 13 to Saturday 15, Osa-Oni said it was most unfortunate that the West, which brought Christianity to Africa, now wants African nations to embrace gay marriage which goes against the very foundation of the Christian faith.
He said: ”The Holy Bible is unambiguous about the issue of homosexuality and I thank God for the National Assembly for passing the bill into an act despite pressure from the West and the courage of President Goodluck Jonathan for signing same into law without giving consideration to threats from Western leaders to stop aides to the nation.”
The Pentecostal archbishop described Jonathan as “God’s appointed for this season,” noting that he should be commended by all men of goodwill in the country for that singular act of bravery and a demonstration of patriotism.
On his part, the Catholic cardinal said: “I don’t know what concerns the United States and the other western nations on a matter that purely concerns our own moral code. As a nation, we have a right to determine what we want and what we don’t want.
”If the western nations decide that homosexuality and lesbianism are good enough for them, fine. But they have no right to impose their will on us. We have made it clear that we do not approve of gay relationship under any guise or its attendant consequences and we have every right to entrench such in our law. That is the wishes of our people, and as you know, the voice of the people is the voice of God.”
On the possibility of Nigerian being sanctioned by the international committee like is the case with Uganda if it fails to bend to their wishes, Okogie said such a move, if contemplated, would be unfortunate as it would only make Nigerians more resolute in their stand.
He said: “I have said it before, and I will continue to say it: nothing can make us bend to their wishes. If, as I gathered, over 83 countries across the world are currently opposed to homosexuality, it shows how unpopular the practice is. It is against our religious belief and custom, and these are very sensitive areas that make us who we are as a people and we cannot compromise them.”

History Ends In Nigeria

HERODOTUS, the father of history, would be astounded about Nigeria’s decision to remove history from its school curriculum. Bourbons, who disappeared because they did not learn from history, are the best example of the perils of ignoring history, especially dedication to studying it.
Every human endeavour is accompanied by events, which are recorded, stored and retrieved when needed. These advance preservation of knowledge through research, references, securing information, and sustenance of cultures through generations. These, in turn, facilitate discovery of fresh facts, interpretation of old facts, reconstruction of events, resolution of conflicts through emergence of facts, advancing the process of negotiations between individuals, groups and nations. History helps us to preserve our culture and civilisation. Life without history is incomplete since sizeable parts of knowledge, information, artifacts, records, totems among others, could be lost.
Jews survived the Holocaust with history. For Africans taken into slavery, their captors deliberately wiped out their knowledge, purged them of any attachment to their culture, destroyed filial relations and created double consciousness in them.
Later study and knowledge of history enabled Africans and those in the Diaspora to reconcile with their past and rise against slavery, racism, colonialism and injustice.
Official reasons Nigeria advances for expunging history as a course of study are that students are shunning it, as there were few jobs for history graduates, and there is dearth of history teachers. These are excuses.
Nigeria’s abhorrence of history is not new. There is no official account of the Civil War. When we obliterate history, we should also destroy our artifacts, burn our museums and monuments, heritage sites and archaeological activities. A generation of Nigerians without knowledge of history would not appreciate these treasures.
How does a country proceed without a knowledge of it heroes and heroines? History is not just a study of events and dates, it provides analytical insights into social formations, anthropological developments, inventions and innovations that shape humanity.
The roles of history in governance, conflict resolutions, diplomacy and international relations, science and medical studies, technological developments, advancement of civilisations and human relations are vital.
People in knowledge enterprise struggle to eke out a living for themselves and their families because we have substituted knowledge, as embodied in history, for insatiable quest for material gains. Those who succeed in the crass race for material acquisition are society’s heroes and heroines because the sense of the past with its values of honesty, intellectual achievements, and hard work have been lost
.If we do not want to go the way of the Bourbons, we must restore the study of history in our education curriculum and make it compulsory to rescue generations of our society who cultural dilution is making rootless.

We’ve left Ige’s killers to God — Son

Twelve years after the assassination  of the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, by yet to be identified gunmen, the family of the late politician declared yesterday that though they had left his killers to God for divine judgment, it would be difficult to forget the memories.
Muyiwa  Ige, the surviving son of the late politician who is the current Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning in Osun State said the killers of his late father could not escape from the wrath of God at an appropriate time.
Speaking in Osogbo, yesterday, Muyiwa noted that the killers of Ige still move round the streets up till date, a situation which he said frustrate the family members.
*Late Bola Ige
*Late Bola Ige
According to him “Bola Ige did not kill himself, Ige did not organize the ceremony where he was assaulted in Ile-Ife by himself, he did not assault himself in Ile-Ife, but some people did that to him.”
He said the killers of his late father would not know peace till they join him, stressing that the ghost of Ige would continue to hurt all those who knew about his assassination.
The late Bola Ige was murdered at his Bodija, Ibadan residence in
December 2001 while serving as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation.
Lamenting the gruesome manner at which his father was killed, Muyiwa
stated that Ige’s killing would never go off the memory of those who knew him.
He recalled that his late father was assaulted in Ile-Ife few days to his killing at the Palace of Ooni of Ife where according to him he presented staff of office to the monarch some 20 years before the incident.

The Need For Teen Development Programs

“We may not be able to prepare the future for our children, but we can at least prepare our children for the future”President  Franklin D. Roosevelt
Teenage years/ young adulthood are the most important period of an individual’s life, changes are occurring both physically and psychologically, there is a growing need for self-identification, pressure directly and indirectly from peers and the society..these are the defining moments of an individual’s life

It is a time of growth, opportunities, as well as a time of challenges, it is the time where adult guidance is needed the most, note the keyword is guidance, as the average teenager has the tendency to be defiant and will do that which they feel strongly influenced to do, few take the future into consideration while making these decisions, and that’s where adult guidance is very important, to provide them with a perspective.
The role of the school body cannot be over emphasized as teenagers spend most of their time in school or participating in school related activities, most friends are made in school, knowledge both good or bad is on a large scale obtained within the “school premise”, hence it is ideal for the school system to modify its structure to cater to not just the academic development of the students in their care but also their career and self development.
There is an urgent need for “Teen Development Programs” that focus on self definition, leadership, goals and other key skills and talent development  areas that help give a teenage or young adult a better perspective on life and what it entails, providing them with constructive information with which they can define and develop their own unique personalities. Gone are the days of enforcing career paths or profession on kids, survival in this century is beyond technical skills or labor, it is driven by innovation and creativity, talent and skills, hence teenagers should be provided the opportunity to look within constructively based on vital information to define who they are, what they want to achieve, why, how, when and where.

Fuel scarcity: Petroleum Minister insists on privatisation of refineries

MINISTER of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, has said that the only solution to the problems in the petroleum industry, especially the scarcity of petroleum products, was the privatisation of refineries in the country.
She assured that the fuel scarcity that had rocked major cities in the country in the last two weeks would come to an end within the next one week.
Diezani
Diezani
Her assurances came as the All Progressives Congress, APC, accused the Federal Government of acting out a clandestine script to increase fuel prices through the back door, saying the ongoing nationwide fuel scarcity might have been induced to make higher fuel prices a fait accompli for Nigerians.
The Minister spoke, yesterday, when she appeared before the Joint Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream, Downstream and Gas) to defend her ministry’s 2014 budget, in company of senior officials of the ministry and heads of agencies under her supervision.
Allison-Madueke, who said the process of privatisation would have been concluded if the various trade unions within the petroleum industry had not protested the action, however, said the Federal Government was continuing with the rehabilitation of the refineries.
She said: “The way forward is the privatisation of the refineries because government should not be involved in the business of fuel sales. I wouldn’t call the current fuel shortage,  a recurring development because there has been no shortage in the last three years until two weeks ago.
“The shortage has a lot to do with a number of issues. First, there seems to have some scare or rumour that the Federal Government wanted to increase the pump price of petroleum products and I have said it categorically that the Nigerian government had no intention of increasing the pump price of petroleum products,  anytime in the near future. That is for certain.
“Second, whether it is as a result of rumour or supply issue, there was a certain level of burden and we found out too that there was a certain level of diversion of petroleum products.
“All of these we are trying to ensure that they are brought to an end very shortly and as a result I have been going out to monitor the fuel distribution and talk to petrol station owners in Lagos and to consumers as well just to get an understanding of where they had the worse shortages over the last couple of weeks.
“But it is coming under control now, we will be flooding the market with petrol over the next few weeks and beyond to ensure that whatever it is that is causing the shortage, whether it is fuel diversion or rumours of pump price increment, it will be stopped by force and we will ensure that those found to be actually diverting fuel or hoarding even after all that we had done, during the period, will undergo punitive measures.
“If we have found a filling station on our list to be diverting or hoarding, no matter who owns the station, whether it is owned by the NNPC, they would face the same punishment.”
She said that her ministry had implemented 87 per cent of its N60 billion budgetary allocation in  2013.
She said:  “We gave implementation figures based on what was released to us. In terms of what was released to us, we performed based on that fairly well to the tune of about 87 per cent implementation based on the actual releases. The portion of the funds that was not released to us cannot be used as basis for performance.
“In terms of 2014, we have a budget figure of about N60billion for the entire ministry both recurrent and capital expenditure. Unfortunately recurrent takes a lot out of every budget in the system. The capital is much less but we intend to move forward as much as we can by ensuring that all the ongoing projects are completed while new projects like LPG framework are carried forward.”
The Minister said the ministry was faced with the challenge of funding, inadequate facilities, sabotage and vandalism, oil theft and oil spill, adding that all these affected the nation’s resources.
“In 2013, of the N60.9 billion appropriated, N50.4 billion was personnel cost, N1.8 billion overhead cost, while N8.1 billion capital cost,” she said
On the N512 million PIB enlightenment campaigns, she said the amount was spent on jingles, publicity and other related issues.
But the Committee Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Paulker who was not satisfied with the explanation on how the N512 million was spent, told the minister to put details of the expenditure in writing.
But the All Progressives Congress, APC, would not have any of the minister’s assurances on increase in the pump price of petrol, accusing the Federal Government of acting out a clandestine script to increase prices through the back door.
According to the party, the ongoing nation-wide scarcity may have been induced to make higher fuel prices a fait accompli for Nigerians.
In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the fact that the scarcity had persisted, despite the claims and counter-claims by the government and the oil marketers, and the measures purportedly taken by the government to ameliorate the situation, was the clearest indication of official deception.

Money laundering: EFCC begins trial of ex-Aviation Minister, Fani-Kayode

Fani-KayodeThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday commenced trial of a former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, at a Federal High Court, Lagos.
Fani-Kayode is standing trial on an amended 40-count charge bordering on money laundering.
At the re-arraignment of Fani-Kayode on Monday, the prosecutor, Mr Festus Keyamo, called his first witness, Mr Okechukwu Okeke, to give his testimony.
Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Okeke, a relationship officer with the First City Monument Bank Plc (FCMB), told the court that the accused maintained an account with FCMB, adding that his account had become dormant.
He alleged that the account of the accused was first domiciled with First Atlantic Bank before it was acquired by Fin Bank which was later acquired by FCMB.
According to the witness, as a relationship officer with the bank, he had the account history of customers.
He said he was given a letter by the legal department of his bank to verify the account history of the accused.
The witness, however, told the court that although the account was inactive, he still had details of transactions stored in the computer.
At this point, the prosecutor then tendered a statement of account of the accused between August 2008 and September 2012.
He informed the court that he was unable to produce the statement of account of the accused between 2004 and 2008 when he served as a minister.
He said he had written a letter to the bank to obtain the statements, and was told to come back in one week.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe, did not oppose the submissions of the prosecutor.
Following this development, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia adjourned the case to March 18 for continuation of trial.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fani-Kayode was first arraigned in December 2008 on a 47-count charge.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and Justice Ramat Mohammed
granted him bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum.
He was re-arraigned with Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako as the trial judge following the transfer of Mohammed out of Lagos Division.
NAN also reports that Fani-Kayode was again re-arraigned the third time on Feb. 11, 2013, with Justice Ajumogobia taking charge following the transfer of Murtala-Nyako.
The EFCC had dropped seven of the original 47-count charge in the five-year-old trial.
Fani-Kayode was alleged to have accepted cash payments to the tune of N100 million, while he held sway at the Ministries of Aviation as well as Culture and Tourism.
The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 15(1), (a), (b), (c), (d) and 15 (2) (a), (b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, the EFCC said.

China blasts Malaysia over missing airline

BEIJING – Beijing on Monday blamed Kuala Lumpur for a lack of information about a vanished Malaysia Airlines flight, as tearful relatives of the 153 Chinese passengers aboard voiced frustration with all sides of the response effort.
Nearly two-thirds of the 239 people aboard Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 were from China, and if the loss of the aircraft is confirmed, it would be China’s second-worst ever air disaster.
The Chinese government “urges the Malaysian side to step up their efforts to speed up the investigation and provide accurate information to China in a timely fashion,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang.
“They should also properly manage work related to family members of passengers and follow-up issues,” he added.
Qin noted that “the incident is still under investigation”, but China’s state-run media minced no words, lashing out at Malaysia and its national carrier over their handling of the missing jet, demanding answers despite the early stage of the investigation and calling for a swifter effort.
For its part, MAS said in a statement that it is deploying an additional aircraft on Tuesday “to bring the families from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur”.
Officials said an Italian and an Austrian whose names were on the passenger manifest — who both had their passports stolen in Thailand — were not on board.
“The Malaysian side cannot shirk its responsibilities,” the Global Times newspaper, which is close to China’s ruling Communist Party, wrote in a scathing editorial. “The initial response from Malaysia was not swift enough.
“There are loopholes in the work of Malaysia Airlines and security authorities,” it said.
“If it is due to a deadly mechanical breakdown or pilot error, then Malaysia Airlines should take the blame. If this is a terrorist attack, then the security check at Kuala Lumpur airport and on the flight is questionable.”
China itself regularly enforces heavyweight security, but authorities are often secretive about real or alleged incidents.
- Terrorism fears -
The China Daily newspaper wrote in an editorial that “terrorism cannot be ruled out”.
“The fact that some of the passengers on board were travelling with false passports should serve as a reminder to the whole world that security can never be too tight,” it added.
“Terrorism, the evil of the world, is still trying to stain human civilisation with the blood of innocent lives,” it said.
Malaysia’s police chief said Monday that one of the men who used the passports had been identified.
Later Monday the country’s Civil Aviation Department chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said that the two men were not of Asian appearance, contrary to previous reports.
At a Beijing hotel, Malaysian embassy officials were processing visa applications for families wanting to take up an airline’s offer to travel to Kuala Lumpur to be closer to the rescue operations.
Scores of relatives made their way into the room, some in groups of five or six, clutching handkerchiefs and wiping away tears from their faces.
Late on Monday some family members arrived at Beijing’s international airport in a small white bus, witnesses at the scene told AFP.
The bus arrived ahead of a 1:30 a.m. flight from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday which some family members had been expected to board. However there was no confirmation of their travel plans.
Earlier many relatives said they would not travel to Malaysia.
“There is more we can do here in China,” one woman told AFP. “They haven’t even found the plane yet.”
- Calls for action -
Some have criticised Malaysia Airlines’ response and information disclosure, asking the Chinese government to devote “strong attention” to the incident.
“There is very little information coming from the airline,” lamented one 40-year-old Chinese man, who said his best friend was on the plane. “They are very slow. We have to rely on the media.”
Chinese government officials had met relatives on Monday, said one, but added: “We really don’t know at this point what sort of help they can offer.”
Beijing sent a working group to Malaysia on Monday, the state-run Xinhua news agency said, including officials from the foreign, public security and transport ministries.
The aircraft’s disappearance came one week after a deadly attack at a train station in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming, in which a group of knife-wielding assailants killed 29 people and wounded 143.
Both Beijing and Washington have condemned the mass stabbing as an act of terror, with Chinese authorities blaming it on separatists from the restive far western region of Xinjiang.
Even as information remains sparse and the hours tick by, many relatives in Beijing continue to believe that the passengers may yet be found, according to one US-trained psychologist who counselled about 20 families awaiting news at the hotel.
“I think most of them are holding onto that thin ray of hope,” he said. “Whether they believe it to be realistic or not, most of them are not letting it go.”
