The FRSC says no accident has been recorded on the Lagos-Ibadan Highway, since Sunday when the commission began special patrols at some designated highways in the country.
Mr Charles Akpabio, the Lagos FRSC Sector Commander, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja in an interview with newsmen shortly after he was decorated with new rank, Assistant Corps Marshal.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the FRSC on Sunday embarked a week-long special patrol, tagged “Operation Shield 3’’ to check accidents on five “critical’’ road corridors across the country.
The corridors are the Lagos-Ibadan, Kaduna-Abuja, Abuja-Kaduna-Zariagi, Benin-Asaba and Ibadan-Ilesha-Akure highways, described by the commission as “death traps’’.
Akpabio, who was among 23 newly promoted officers of the FRSC, said the goal of the exercise had, so far, been achieved in the Lagos area as a result of the dedication of the commission’s operatives.
“As I speak with you, we have not recorded any road traffic crash, so far.
“I believe that with the dedication of the officers on the field and with proper evaluation, we will achieve the goal of operation,’’ he said.
The Lagos sector commander thanked the commission for the promotion, and pledged to continue contributing to the sustenance the commission’s mandate of achieving safer road.
“As one of the pioneer officers of the commission, I look forward to contributing more for its development and the sustenance of safer road in Nigeria,’’ he said.
Decorating the officers earlier, Mr Osita Chidoka, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, said that the commission’s traffic rules enforcement and rescue strategies had been improved to achieve safety.
Chidoka charged the newly promoted officers to do more as every road users look forward to the commission for safety.
NAN reports that one Deputy Corps Marshal and five Assistant Corps Marshal, including the Lagos and Rivers state sector commanders, 14 corps commanders and three assistant corps commanders, were decorated.
