Three policemen feared killed in Lagos

Three policemen may have been killed in an accident which occurred when they were chasing a motorcyclist at Cement Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos, on Friday.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the accident, which occurred early in the morning, involved riot policemen.
A vulcaniser, who has his workshop close to the scene, told our correspondent that if not because he arrived at his shop late, he would have witnessed the accident as it happened right in front of where he plies his trade.
The man, who pleaded anonymity, said, “I got here and saw people discussing the accident.
“I was told that the policemen were in a Rapid Response Squad van. The van was chasing an okada rider, who was riding against the traffic and heading to Oshodi. The rider carried two passengers.
“They had almost caught the rider when he escaped through a side street. The police van lost control as the driver, who was on high speed, applied the brake suddenly. The van ran into a stationary bus.
“The policemen at the back of the van were flung out. I heard that the lifeless bodies of three of the policemen were taken away from here.”
Saturday PUNCH learnt from other residents of the area that when the policemen were flung out of the van, some of them might have hit their head on the culvert by the road.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, told our correspondent on the telephone that it was a minor accident.
“The information you got is wrong. The policemen heeded a distress call and were hit from the back by a bus.
“Two of the policemen sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. They have since been discharged.”

How 75-yr-old disarmed four kidnappers

Chief Olabanji Akingbule, 75, the Odunwo of Ondo, Ondo State, has narrated how he disarmed and captured four kidnappers who attempted to abduct him.
The septuagenarian spoke with Daily Sun: “I was inside my house on the fateful day and dressing up to go out when my wife informed me that policemen had arrested my son. When I peeped through the veranda and saw the people, I told my wife that they might not be policemen, but kidnappers. “
They were four in number. Two of them were inside a Golf car parked at the front of my house, while the rest came upstairs to meet me. They introduced themselves as kidnappers. The two that came upstairs held a gun each.
One of them made attempt at dragging me downstairs, while the other one was with my wife who was shouting on top of her voice. An attempt was made to drag her inside the house by the one that was close to her.
However, as luck would have it, the noise she made attracted people in the neighborhood. “Although, they made spirited effort to carry me, but by the special grace of God, I insisted that I was not going to follow them.
In the process, the one close to me brought a white substance that was kept inside a bottle and asked me to inhale it. When I refused, he wanted to pour it on my head.
“I summoned courage and used my right hand to block it. As a result, both the bottle and the gun fell off his hands downstairs. When they noted the presence of people, the two men ran out of the house to join their colleagues.
”When I saw that he took another direction where he would not be in position to find the gun and the white substance, I moved to the place and picked up the two items.
I called the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Funbi-Fagun division, Mrs. Joyce Maiyaki-Matthew, who responded immediately.
“I thank God for saving my life, and my late mother, Madam Esther Ogunhinmola Akingbule, who trained me on how to be courageous. If I was not courageous enough, I might not be able to disarm the  kidnappers who came with gun and very giant in height,” he told Daily Sun.

New silicone breast implants debut

Good news for breast “MistaQB” as the revolutionary MemoryShape breast implants have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for breast augmentation in women aged 22 and older, and also for breast reconstruction.

In a news release, the manufacturer, Mentor Worldwide LLC, said the implants have been approved outside of the United States for more than a decade. The product is available in a range of sizes and is tear-drop shaped to mimic the natural shape of a breast.

The product, which is very likely to be available in Africa and possibly – Nigeria – has been clinically studied among 955 augmentation and reconstruction patients participating in an ongoing 10-year study.

However, after six years, the study has found a low rate of “adverse events” including rupture/

The FDA said that it’s approval was based on six years of data from 95 women showing a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for this implant. Mentor’s MemoryShape Breast Implant showed similarrates of complications and outcomes as previously approved breast implants.

These complications included tightening of the area around the implant, re-operation, implant removal, an uneven appearance(asymmetry), and wrinkling. Fissures or cracks were observed in the gel of some MemoryShape Breast Implants, a characteristic called gel fracture.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, “It’s important to remember that breast implants are not lifetime devices. Women should fully understand the risks associated with breast implants before considering augmentation or reconstruction surgery, and they should recognize that long-term monitoring is essential.”

Breast implant surgery should not be performed on women with any
active infection, untreated cancer or who are pregnant or nursing.

With this approval, there are now five FDA-approved silicone
gel-filled breast implants available in the United States manufactured
by three companies: Allergan, Mentor and Sientra.

4 mind games women play on men - Guys becareful

There’s no woman on this planet who hasn't mastered the art of getting late for a date or making her man wait endlessly. Women derive fun from this.

Women are known to be the torchbearers of mind games! But jokes apart, men will definitely acknowledge the fact that women do know the game better than them.

The waiting game
There’s no woman on this planet who hasn’t mastered the art of getting late for a date or making her man wait endlessly. Women derive fun from this. It not only makes her feel important but also dominant in the relationship!

The bait game
The bait game is common amongst most women in their 20s or 30s. The forever question of asking your boyfriend/husband whether you look fat in a particular dress is something most of us constantly do on a day-to-day basis. If he says yes, you immediately seek recluse. But if he says a no, then you end up feeling that he just doesn’t care.

The ‘hard to get’ game
This is one game each and every woman plays in the beginning of her relationship, irrespective of the age. A woman does this to simply either put off the guy, make herself feel important or test his worth.

The ‘dumb game’
Most women know that they are better at maths than her crush but still prefer to play dumb! For example, even if she knows how to connect the wire to the TV, she would love to play dumb and ask the guy to do it for her.

These are just a few mind games that women love to play on men to get him to do things she expects out of him.

PHOTOS: Igbo Man To Be A Mayor In The City of Detroit in Michigan.

John Olumba, presently a State of Michigan House Representative is a 31-year-old Nigerian and is running for the post of mayor in the city of Detroit in Michigan.

He is a lawyer, an ordained pastor and is the first man with Nigerian roots to be elected to the state office in Michigan's history.

In a recent interview he stated that his father hails from Owerri in Imo State and he wants to lead the troubled city into an age of revival.

But he questions the record of some of the candidates. “Are we going to go with someone who’s been a part of the political establishment? Across the United States, part of the slogan was ‘forward.’ It’s time for people to stop looking backward,” he said.

The newcomer to the mayoral race says he’s not worried about the other candidates and says he represents innovation. His plan for the city, he says, is trilateral: a war on poverty, corruption and crime according to him, all go hand in hand.

The attackers allegedly invaded Bolgang, Karkashi and Magama villages on Wednesday morning, shooting indiscriminately.
They were said to have gone with motorbikes after those that tried to escape.
Some of those killed were said to be students writing their National Examinations Council, NECO, examinations, while several houses and vehicles were burnt.
It was learnt that the attack was launched from nearby Shikal village, where they reportedly gathered days earlier.
Majority of those killed at Magama were said to be the aged and children, while nine people were reported killed at Bolgang, which was completely razed.
‘I lost my mother, brother’
Chairman of the Provincial Church Council of COCIN, Rev. Nandip Miri, said he lost his aged father and brother in the attack, adding that the exact number of those killed was yet to be ascertained.
He said: “We cannot know the actual number of people that lost their lives as we are still picking dead bodies from the bush. The attackers followed the victims on motorcycles, killing them mercilessly as they tried to escape.

wtf! as nelson mandela fights for his life in hospital, his family fights in court over burial location

As Nelson Mandela fights for his life in hospital, his relatives are pitted against each other in a legal battle, reportedly over where members of the family should be buried.
On Friday, sixteen members of the Mandela family brought an urgent application to a regional court, reportedly to force Mandela’s grandson Mandla to return remains of family members to a plot in the ancestral village where Mandela has said he wants to be buried.
Mandla, a local chief in nearby Mvezo, had exhumed the remains of three of Mandela’s children in Qunu in 2011 and brought them to his village, allegedly without the consent of the rest of the family.
“I have been instructed by the 16 family members including (daughters) Makaziwe and Zindzi to take action against Mandla,” the family lawyer Wesley Heyes said.
Heyes refused to comment on the reason for the legal tussle, but local media said it was about a long-running feud over the remains.
“We can’t say anything further due to the sensitivity of the case,” said Heyes.
The court was told that a sheriff delivered the paper to Mandla’s homestead and found the gates locked. The papers were nailed to the gate after several unsuccessful attempts to hand them over.
“The sheriff hooted and called Mandla on his phone, which was not answered,” said one of the Mandela lawyers David Smith.
Mandla’s spokesman Freddy Pilusa said he was not able to comment on the case.
“He hasn’t been served with those papers so he wouldn’t be able to comment.”
The controversial removal of graves has recently came into the spotlight following reported family squabbles over the final resting place of the ailing Mandela.
The hastily removed graves belonged to Mandela’s eldest son Thembekile who died in 1969, his nine-month-old infant Makaziwe who passed away in 1948, and Mandla’s own father Magkatho who died from an AIDS related illness in 2005.
The trio were reburied under the cover of darkness in Mvezo, in a ceremony overseen by Mandla.
The issue of the graves was also at the centre of a family meeting earlier this week.
On Thursday local media reported that Makaziwe, Mandela’s oldest daughter, was granted permission by a chief in Qunu to have the remains repatriated. Mandla had reportedly argued Mandela should be buried in Mvezo.

mother abandons baby in hospital

Health workers and patients at the Osun State General Hospital, Osogbo were left confused on Friday when a nursing mother, Mrs Grace Adipe, allegedly abandoned her three-day-old baby in the hospital.
The hospital community was taken aback as the news of the abandonment spread.
A woman, Adijat Bamijoko, told NAN that she was in the hospital to assist a patient when the incident occurred on Thursday, and wondered “how a nursing mother could abandon her child.
“Although, I do not know the woman, but one wonders why she should abandon her baby in the hospital where Gov. Rauf Aregbesola had made medication free for all,” she said.
Other people who expressed surprise over the incident, called on the hospital’s management to ensure that the fleeing mother was brought back to care for her baby.
Search team , including government officials and law enforcement agents had failed in their effort to find the woman.
The Osun Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs Mofolake Adegboyega, said in a statement that efforts to contact the woman by the hospital authorities were yet to yield results.
Adegboyega called Adipe’s relations and members of the public to be vigilant on the whereabouts of the woman.
She urged members of the public to consider the innocence and future of the child and help in efforts to find the mother and her relations.
The commissioner said that any information about Adipe’s whereabouts should be directed to the nearest police station or the Director of Social Welfare in the ministry, Mrs Grace Adegoke.

women now drug men and steal their valuables in florida.

South Florida authorities are asking for the public’s help to find four “foxy thieves” they say are drugging men they pick up at high-end bars and stealing tens of thousands of dollars in cash, jewelry, guns and other valuables.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office released photos of the four suspects, all in their 20s, and have attained arrest warrants for them. Investigators suspect there may be more women involved in the ring.
“They’re attractive women that go into a bar and they have a scam and they work it again and again,” said Dani Moschella, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
The scam works like this: go to an upscale bar, flirt with a middle-age or older man wearing expensive jewelry, go back to his home, slip a drug in his drink, rob him and leave before he wakes up.
This is what Subhanna Beyah, 25, Johnnina Miller, 25, Keshia Clark, 27 and Ryan Elkins, 23, have allegedly been doing for the past few months in upscale bars in South Florida.
Investigators have identified four of the women’s victims, Moschella said, adding that they believe other victims “haven’t come forward because they’re embarrassed.”
“This investigation is by no means over,” she added. “We anticipate identifying other suspects and other victims.”
Scott Rosen, 54, told CNN two of the suspects paired up when they worked the scam on him. Rosen said met the two women at YOLO, a popular bar in Fort Lauderdale’s business district, and the three left the bar for his house. There, Rosen said, one of the women distracted him while the other made him a drink.
“I got drugged,” Rosen said.
The next thing Rosen remembers is waking up to discover over $250,000 worth of his personal items gone — handguns, diamonds and a Rolex watch he was wearing — along with the women.
“It could have been worse,” he noted. “They could have shot me with my own handgun.”
The women, who allegedly used fake names during their ruses, are each being charged with one count of grand theft. Broward County authorities are eager to get these women in custody. The sheriff’s office has joined with Crime Stoppers to offer a $1,000 reward for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest.
“We really want to get these women off the street … because they’re drugging their victims, presumably,” Moschella said. “We don’t know how long it will be before they end up killing somebody accidentally.”

british pm stops plans for £3,000 bond from nigerians, others

David Cameron has slammed the brakes on government plans to demand a £3,000 migrant bond from “high risk” overseas visitors after news of the policy provoked uproar in Delhi and threatened his attempt to boost trade links with India.
The prime minister’s allies said Mr Cameron had “not signed off” details of the policy – trailed in Sunday newspapers – while Lib Dem and Tory business ministers warned that the idea would be damaging to Britain’s economic interests.
Mr Cameron has told Theresa May, home secretary, that he will not sanction any policy that undermines his growth agenda or the “open for business” message he delivered on a recent trip to India.
“The prime minister has not cleared this policy,” said one ally. “He doesn’t want to do anything that cuts across the message he took to India.”
Although Downing St said pilot studies involving the use of migrant bonds – or deposits – for some visitors would go ahead, neither Mr Cameron nor Nick Clegg, his Lib Dem deputy, have agreed the scope of the scheme or the size of the bonds.
Mr Cameron is especially keen that the pilot study targets “high risk” individuals and is not seen as being aimed at any particular country.
Ms May wanted the trial of a £3,000 bond to begin in November, levied on short-term visitors from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Ghana.
Vince Cable, Lib Dem business secretary, has expressed concerns about the proposal and his anxiety is shared by David Willetts, Tory science minister. Mr Cable raised the issue in cabinet on Tuesday, saying he was concerned the home office was misrepresenting the pilots as a way of bringing down net migration.
The Home Office said on Tuesday the November pilot would be “highly selective”, focusing only on those visitors from India and other countries thought to present a “residual risk” of overstaying. “Any pilot will not apply to all visitors from the selected countries and the vast majority of visitors will not need to pay a bond,” a spokeswoman said.
It is understood those who have already visited the UK would not be subject to the levy.
“It is certainly a stupid move, but it is also extremely bad public diplomacy”
- Brahma Chellaney, New Delhi-based strategic affairs analyst
However, tour operators were dismayed at the introduction of any type of deposit system and complained they had not been consulted.
“This doesn’t exactly garland the welcome message we are extending to India and other countries,” said Tom Jenkins, chief executive of the European Tour Operators Association. “This really seems disproportionate to the threat. It feels the inbound market is being sacrificed to a domestic political agenda.”
Mary Rance, chief executive of trade body UKinbound, said: “It would be a very incongruous step to take at this time, when we are in open dialogue about trying to improve the process \[for visitors]. It should be easier rather than \[more] difficult for visitors.”
The proposals have been badly received in India’s business community, with executives used to travelling freely to London echoing the vociferous complaints of the nation’s leading trade bodies.
“In simple terms, it’s madness,” said Tarun Kataria, Mumbai-based chief executive of investment bank Religare Capital India. “It would create endless degrees of uncertainty, and such a large sum of money is bound to have an impact on the number of people going to Britain from India.”
The move led to demands on Tuesday for a tit-for-tat response from India’s government, including an article on FirstPost, a widely read news site, headlined “Why India must retaliate against UK £3,000 visa bond” and editorials in leading newspapers calling for a rethink.
Security analysts said the move was likely to undermine Mr Cameron’s attempts to deepen the UK’s bilateral relationship with Asia’s third-largest economy.
“It is certainly a stupid move, but it is also extremely bad public diplomacy. It will raise a hue and cry here,” says Brahma Chellaney, a strategic affairs analyst at New Delhi’s Centre for Policy Research think tank.
“It really just doesn’t make any sense. It will have detrimental effect on the UK-India relationship, and it will create a bad image for the UK in India, and also uproar elsewhere in the world.”

Barely 2 days ago, 4 people believed to be armed robbers were executed by hanging in Benin, Edo State, now is another four on death row waiting to be hanged also.
Justice Chukwuemeka Ohakwe of Owerri High Court on Tuesday sentenced seven persons to death for murder of one Okechukwu Osuji on May 11, 2001
The offence was contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Volume 11 laws of the Eastern Nigeria 1963 applicable to Imo State.
The condemned persons include:

Justice Ohakwe also discharged and acquitted the third, sixth and seventh accused persons (Uchenna Udeh, Ikechukwu Ukonu and Boniface Okoro) for lack of evidence.
In his judgment, the trial judge said: “From the evidence by the prosecution, there is no evidence except the confessional statement by the first accused person (Ejike Okoro) linking the third, sixth and seventh accused persons with the murder.”
According to him, the confessional statement of the first accused person was not binding on them and they were therefore discharged and acquitted. He said the prosecution had established the offence of murder of Okechukwu Osuji on May 11, 2001 against the first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth and 10th accused persons, stating that they had been found guilty of offence of murder. He therefore sentenced each of the accused persons to death by hanging.
Ohakwe said the prosecution had an overwhelming evidence that members of a secret cult killed the victim in a thick forest along Toronto-Egbu Road in Owerri North Local Government Area of the state on the fateful day and collected his brain for ritual purposes.
The accused persons who were caught by the police in an uncompleted building during their evil act all hail from Owalla Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area.

A governorship aspirant and philanthropist, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah Friday finally pitched his political tent with the Labour Party for the 2014 governorship polls in Anambra state.
To ensure that due process was followed in his registration as a member of the party, Ubah went to his Obiokpuno, Otolo Nnewi ward where the chairman of the ward, Mr Amobi Nkerimonye registered him while the secretary of the ward, Mr Emeka Adirika issued him with the LP membership card.

Ubah said he decided to join LP after due consultations with the churches, family, elders and stakeholders in the state who endorsed his choice for the party.

Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Mr Samuel Orargbulam thanked Ubah for joining the party, saying that they had been praying for a credible, suitable, qualified and acceptable aspirant like him to join the party.
He said that with such aspirant like Ubah, the party would sweep the governorship polls come 2014 and make sure that the state was given its proper place in the country that would come from his development projects.
