Hepatitis-B Kills Faster Than AIDS

A medical practitioner, Dr. Joseph Onigbinde, has said that Hepatitis B virus kills faster than the Human-immunodeficiency virus and the Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome.

Onigbinde, who spoke at a screening programme at the Ropheka Hospital and Dental Clinic, Akowonjo, Lagos, as part of activities to mark the World Hepatitis Day on Sunday, said the virus was ravaging Nigerians because many were ignorant of its mode of transmission.

He said Hepatitis B, which is said to be 10 times more infectious than HIV/AIDS, could stay in the human body for up to 40 years before manifesting.

Onigbinde said, “It is usually late for people to detect their Hepatitis B status because it might not have any obvious symptom in most instances. The virus ravages the liver and the only way to tell if you have Hepatitis B is by undergoing screening.”

He explained that the virus, when detected early in young persons could be treated effectively with drugs.

“Hepatitis B carriers still have high hopes of survival because the disease is treatable provided too much damage to the liver cells has not occurred. It can also be prevented using vaccines,” he said.

Also, the National President, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, has called on government to include liver failure treatment into the list of diseases covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Enabulele, in a statement on Monday, said since most Nigerians who have chronic hepatitis B or C infections were not aware of it, the risk of developing liver diseases, the end result of this infection, is very high in the country.

He said, “About one million people die each year from causes related to viral hepatitis, most commonly from liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis B and C are blood-borne diseases and most people with chronic infection are unaware that they carry the virus, and they also transmit the virus unknowingly to other people because of their lack of awareness.”

Enabulele added that to reduce rates of infections, government must increase hepatitis B vaccine coverage by producing it locally.

Fashola Denies Deportation Allegation At Meeting With Igbo Leaders

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Friday received in audience a leading Igbo socio-political group, ‘Aka Ikenga” debunking the suggestions of discrimination, deportation or violation of rights against Anambra citizens as being orchestrated in the media by his Anambra State counterpart.

Governor Fashola, who addressed the group, led by its President, Chief Goddy Uwazuruike, said there was no truth in the allegation or suggestion of deportation, discrimination or violation of rights of Anambra indigenes by the Lagos State Government as alleged by the Anambra State Government.

“I want to use this opportunity to say that none of these suggestions of discrimination or violation of rights is true. I don’t know how I could set out to deport Anambrarians and look Ben (Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning) in the eye; because that is his State and he is a member of this Government and there are no decisions that we take in private that are not discussed extensively and if there are very sensitive issues there, his advice has been very useful”, the Governor said.

According to the Governor, “These issues have been raised in a politically coloured atmosphere and in a way that seeks to incite our Igbo brothers against their host communities in the run up to the Anambra Governorship election”. He added, “The impression sought to be created is that Lagos has adopted a discriminatory policy against the Ndigbo generally and against the Anambra people in particular”.

He also debunked the suggestion that there were 72 Anambra persons involved in the alleged deportation pointing out that there were only 14 persons who were taken home to Onitsha at their own request after they were rehabilitated at the State’s rehabilitation Centre at Majidun.

He declared, “I think that there are facts which have been over-exaggerated and distorted and I want to address those facts. The fact was that 14 people, not 70, not 72, not 67, as were being reported, were picked up on our streets as part of a routine exercise and we took them to Majidun Rehabilitation Centre, not a detention camp as has been published and you can go there and see”.

Other facts which, according to the Governor, were also distorted includes the allegation by the Anambra State Government that they were neither informed nor consulted before the alleged deportation took place. He stated, “There was exchange of correspondences. We told them that we had 14 people who claimed to be from Anambra State and all the while, we were telling them of integrating these people back to their home communities. They were replying on their letter heads with “Integration”. So I don’t know how integration has suddenly become deportation”.

“Incidentally we have ourselves just received a similar notice from the Government of Akwa Ibom State of two alleged Lagos indigenes whom they picked up in a lunatic clean up exercise in Uyo and our officials are responding to it”, the Governor said displaying the letter from the Akwa Ibom State Government dated 23rd July 2913 and the response by the Lagos State Government dated 26th July, 2013.

Promising to make the letters available to the group, Governor Fashola said the first letter titled “Reintegration of Beggars/Destitutes” was dated April 9, 2013,and sent to the Anambra State Liaison Office in Lagos adding that a reply titled, “Re-integration of Beggars/Destitutes” and dated 15th April, 2013 was received from the said office demanding the names and identities of the 14 persons. A reply dated 29th of April was also sent to the Liaison Office giving names, town and local government areas of the people as supplied by the people themselves. There was no further response, the Governor said.

The Governor expressed dismay that his Anambra State counterpart, Mr. Peter Obi, decided to take the matter to the press instead of seeking clarification from him, adding, “It is not clear to me why the Governor of Anambra State chose the media as the first place to report his grievance. He has called me severally on less important issues. This time he chose not to call me. He wrote to the President, he did not write to me to complain. I am at a loss why this is the strategy this time”.

“I have read excerpts in the newspapers of a letter purportedly written by him to His Excellency, Mr. President, where he was quoted as saying among other things that; “…Lagos State did not even bother to consult with Anambra State authorities before deporting 72 persons…”, the Governor said adding that if Governopr Obi actually made the allegation, he was either being economical with the truth and deliberately seeking to mislead the nation or unaware of actions taken by his officers.

The Governor said his administration has as a policy embarked on the rehabilitation of the mentally ill people who often roam the streets with not many people taking note of them adding that plans are already on to rehabilitate and upgrade the Maidijun Centre to a State-run mental institution to complement the Federal-owned Psychiatric Hospital in Yaba.

The Governor commended the Aka Ikenga for the “leadership initiative and responsibility” they have taken to seek clarification on the matter wondering why some people should decide to make an issue from what he described as a routine matter of governance.

Recalling that any time elections were coming up in Anambra State as it is coming up now, there seemed a potential intention to incite Igbo communities against their host communities, Governor Fashola, who described the controversy as “a storm in a tea cup” reiterated, “This has nothing to do with either Igbo or any coloration of the Igbo nation or the Igbo people in any sense”, adding, “Unfortunately, it has profited some people to paint it that way”..

“Our ability to live mutually and co-exist peacefully has been critical to the progress we have recorded here and nothing will jeopardize that relationship. This place remains a home and refuge for all those who respect our laws and we intend to keep it that way”, Governor Fashola said.

On the allegation of violation of rights by “some human rights advocates”, the Governor declared, “I wish to say that while we respect the rights and freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution, none of them is absolute in the way that some of our “experts” want the public to believe”.

Speaking on the agencies of the State, LATSMA and KAI, which the group also touched upon, Governor Fashola explained that the the agencies were necessary in the maintenance of law and order in the State wondering what would happen to the traffic in Lagos if they were disbanded.

The Governor who acknowledged that there would always be bad eggs in any group, however, said it would be more profitable to identify particular offenders within the rank and file of the LATSMA or KAI and report such people for trial and sanction if found guilty of any misdemeanor.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, the President of Aka Ikenga, Chief Goddy Uwazuruike, said the group as representatives of the Igbo Community in Lagos came to express their unalloyed support to the Governor and Government of Lagos State with whom, according to him, “we have shared very excellent relationships”.

Describing the on-going controversy as unfortunate, the Aka Ikenga President said the issue had earlier created bad blood among the Igbo community in the State until the former Anambra State Governor, Senator Chris Ngige, came in last Sunday and reassured the people that they were being misinformed.

Reiterating that the issue must have been a result of misinformation in the media, Chief Uwazuruike said their visit was to seek clarification from the Governor in order to be in a better position to clear the growing controversy among the Igbo community adding that the clarification was even more expedient given the coming governorship election in Anambra State.

Expressing the continued unalloyed support of the Ndigbo in Lagos to the Governor and his Government the President Generalof the Igbo socio-cultural group recalled that the publications in the media since then had not helped matters adding that members of the Aka Ikenga were convinced “that somebody somewhere was trying to give this Governor a bad image”.

Also present at the occasion were the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Ben Akabueze, National Publicity Secretary of ACN, Alhaji. Lai Mohammed, Mr. Joe Igbokwe on the State Government side while on the Aka Ikenga side were its Vice President, Chief Lawrence Amadi, its Secretary General, Mr. Paul Nnaji and Chief Ugo Ofodile, a party Chieftain, among others.

Woman beats three-year-old girl to death for vomitting

According to a story by Punchng, a 21-year-old woman, Rebecca Bassey, (pictured above) has been arrested for allegedly beating her husband’s three-year-old niece, Deborah Bassey, to death.

Rebecca is accused of beating Deborah at their home in Ijaiye Ojokoro, Lagos on July 22nd because the little girl vomited and defecated on herself.

Continue to read the full report from Punch...

A police source told PUNCH Metro:

“The victim (Deborah) lost her mother in 2010. Early this year, Deborah’s father was evicted from his home and he decided to send Deborah and his second child to go and stay with his brother, Vincent, until he settles down. Deborah and her nine-year-old sister were living with Vincent and his wife, Rebecca, in a one-room apartment at Powerline, Jankara, Ijaiye Ojokoro. However, Rebecca was always maltreating the two children.”

According to police investigations, on the day of the incident, Deborah woke up around 5.30am with a high temperature.
The three-year-old girl was said to have started vomiting and defecating soon after.
This was said to have angered Rebecca, who instead of administering treatment to the child, decided to beat her up.

A police source said, “In the process of beating the girl, the suspect pushed her and she fell, hitting her head against the edge of a wooden chair in the room.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim started to bleed from the head. Some neighbours rushed her to Ahmadiyya Hospital, where she was referred to Orile Agege General Hospital where she later died.

A woman leader in the area, Kudirat Ogunseyi, was said to have reported the matter to Ijaye Ojokoro Police Division after which the suspect was arrested.

Some neighbours, in their statements at the police station, described the suspect as a hot-tempered woman, who was fond of beating the children.

“The way that woman beats up the children was very worrying to the extent that the landlord had threatened to evict them,” one of the statements reads.

Vincent  told the police that he was not present when his wife beat his niece to death.

“I was not at home when the incident happened. I am a photographer during   daytime  but I   work as a vigilante  group member.  So I hardly sleep at home,” he said.

The suspect however said she did not kill the victim deliberately. She said she only pushed Deborah and she hit her head against the chair.

“I am a housewife and I have a 10-month-old baby. I did not mean to kill her (Deborah). I only pushed her because she vomited and defecated on the floor. I was only trying to correct her. It was not deliberate. I am a mother too and I know how I would feel if my son was killed,” she said.

It was learnt that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

A source at the SCID said the police were waiting for autopsy. He added that if other wounds were found on  other parts of the victim’s body, it would prove that the victim was indeed tortured before her death.

Godogodo (Notorious Armed-Robber), Captured In Ibadan

A wanted robbery suspect, Abiodun Ogunjobi, aka Abbey Godogodo, who was said to have been terrorising the South-West for some time, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.

According to police authorities, the suspect led the gang that killed seven people, including the owner of 04 Hotel, Ajah, Lagos, Olanrewaju Subair, on July 7, 2013.

They also killed two other security guards at a popular hotel along Apapa Road, Ebute Meta area of the state on the same day.

The suspect, who was paraded on Thursday, told PUNCH Metro that he killed many policemen, adding that he had been into robbery for over 10 years and had built houses.

Ogunjobi said, “I started robbery in 1996 but in 1999, I was charged for fighting. I spent about seven years in prison. My prolonged stay in prison for minor crime of fighting hardened me and I vowed to pay back the police for that injustice. After I was released, I went to Katangowa in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos to meet my friend, Odun.

“Odun was an armed robber, so, we started operating together. We worked with several gangs and I invested lots of my money in arms buying. I also built five houses in Ifo, Ilaro, Ikorodu and Ibadan. I usually kill policemen and take their rifles because policemen have killed several of my boys and taken most of my rifles from them.

“I have no regrets for all I have done. I have no advice for young people, who want to become armed robbers like me. I have three children from three women. The police should take all my properties.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the 36-year-old suspect was arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad at his home in the Egbeda area of Ibadan, Oyo State, after he had been monitored for three weeks.

Policemen attached to SARS, said the suspect narrowly escaped arrest on July 14, 2013 when he and members of his gang engaged SARS operatives in a shoot-out along Eko Bridge, Lagos Island, after they killed two policemen at Ebute-Ero and Ajao Estate respectively.

According to police authorities, the suspect had been evading arrest because he hardly used the same gang members twice.

A police source said, “He is the most notorious armed robber we have had in the South-West in the past 14 years.

“We arrested him 11am on Thursday at his mansion at the Olowu area of Egbeda LGA Ibadan Oyo State and recovered two AK47 rifles and 10 loaded AK47 magazines in his house.

“Godogodo has killed many policemen and civilians. His most recent activity was at Ajah, where he killed the owner of 04 Hotel and eight others, including two policemen few weeks ago. He has also led several bank robberies in Kwara, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo states.”

The Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, described the suspect as a notorious criminal, who had been on the radar of the police for some time.

He said the suspect would be given medical treatment and charged to court.

Deportation Of Igbos From Lagos: Senator Ngige Speaks

'Deportation' of Igbos from Lagos: Senator Ngige speaks

Former Governor of Anambra State and Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige has addressed the media on the alleged deportation of ndi Igbo from Lagos State. Senator Ngige stated this in a letter to Aka Ikenga a socio cultural group which had requested that he take up the matter with the Governor of Lagos State. Below are

the contents of his letter and attached annexes( communication between Lagos State and Anambra governments)

Greetings,

I write in respect of the above subject matter, which Aka Ikenga at its 28th July, 2013 general meeting which I was privileged to attend as Special Guest of Honour, requested me to take up with the Lagos State Government. I am glad to inform you that I was received in audience the day after, by His Excellency; Governor Raji Babatunde Fashola( SAN) the Governor of Lagos State and the issue was discussed exhaustively.

At the meeting, the Lagos State Governor disclosed that contrary to claims, the issue in question has nothing to do with deportation, but a Social Welfare Intervention, involving several homeless destitutes and other psychiatric cases roaming the streets and some living under the bridges in Lagos. These people were taken in and treated and cared for by the Lagos State Government free of charge and thereafter needed to be reintegrated with their families.

After this rehabilitation the affected people disclosed their true identities and the disclosure revealed that 14 of them were from Anambra State. For the purpose of reintegration with their kith and kin back home( most of them had nobody in Lagos) and for further social support and care, Lagos State Government communicated the Anambra State Government as well as other affected state governments to come forward and identify and take over their people. (see letter as annex 1)

On receipt of this communication, Anambra State Government requested for the identities of those claiming to be from the state( see letter as annex 2). The list was promptly supplied to them by Lagos State for immediate and urgent action( see letter as annex 3).

With further contact and pressure Anambra State Government preferred that the handing over be done at bridge head and Lagos State obliged but found no Anambra State Government Representative on arrival at the agreed date and was hence forced to leave the people at a government office they found at the Niger Bridgehead.

The Lagos State Government further explained that this kind of exchange of destitutes occur between states, as she recently went to Akwa Ibom State to take back two of her rehabilitated citizens.( see letter as annex 4).

You will recall Mr. President of Aka Ikenga, that I had assured the Aka Ikenga members that the Lagos State Government that I am familiar with will not go out of its way to cause hardship to our people and this is evident in its disposition as the first Government of Lagos State to appoint an Igbo as a commissioner and many others into other cabinet positions.

For promotion and maintenance of the good relationship that exists between the Igbos who form about 25% of the population of Lagos State and their Lagos host, I have secured an appointment for you, the President and Executive members of Aka Ikenga to further discuss this matter and other sundry issues affecting Ndi Igbo in Lagos State, with the Lagos State Governor on a date that will be mutually agreed by both parties.

As a member of the Action Congress of Nigeria ( ACN), which is the party in power in Lagos State, I wish to further reassure you and Aka Ikenga in particular and Ndi Igbo in general, that the government of Lagos State, that I am familiar with does not and will not harbour any anti Igbo agenda, as being, insinuated in some certain quarters.

Accept as usual the assurances of my highest regards.

Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige, MD, OON, KSJ

APGA To Sue Fashola, Demands N20b damages

• APGA to sue Fashola, demands N20b damages

• Rival APC flays INEC, says acronym unavailable

DESPITE the registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the new party has fresh hurdles to overcome.

The obstacles are from the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and a political group that has APC as its acronym, African People’s Congress.

APGA Thursday directed its lawyers to sue Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, alleging that he mischievously dragged it into the merger of the three parties that formed the APC. The three are Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

It said that Fashola planned to cause confusion in APGA through a newspaper advertisement he placed Thursday, congratulating APC on being registered.

APGA expressed shock on the use of its logo in the advert along with those of the other two parties.

Addressing the media Thursday on the issue, the National Chairman of APGA, Victor Umeh, demanded that Fashola should within seven days do a retraction in an advertorial, removing its logo in all the newspapers where the earlier publication appeared Thursday.

He added that the governor must be made to pay damages of N20 billion for allegedly causing confusion and attempting to steal the supporters of the party through the advertorial.

Umeh noted that while his party had congratulated APC on scaling INEC’s registration hurdles, it would resist any deliberate attempt by the new political grouping or its officials to deceive its members and cause confusion in the APGA.

He said that Fashola as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) could not claim to be unaware of the fact that APGA was not among the three parties that merged into the APC.

According to him, unlike the three parties that merged, APGA was never involved in any convention where it decided to dissolve into the APC.

Umeh added: “Of course, the clear intention of this advertorial is to give the impression that APGA is now part of the new APC and that APGA is no longer a political party. Coming from a Senior Advocate of Nigeria like Fashola, it shows that the governor knows the implications of what he has done, and this we will not accept from him and the APC.

“He is also aware that at no time did any APGA official appear in any meeting where merger talks were held. He is also aware that we recently made it clear to Nigerians that APGA was never part of the merger talks andwill never be part of it. But surprisingly this morning (yesterday), mischievously our logo has been so fraudulently included in these advertorials with an intention to deceive all the supporters of APGA in Nigeria and the world that we have now become part of APC.

“The INEC Thursday while announcing the registration of APC named the parties that merged as CPC, ANPP and ACN.

Accordingly, INEC has withdrawn the certificates of these three parties. How could a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who is also a governor of a state, go and insert APGA logo in such a publication?

“Politics of confusion must be avoided in Nigeria. We must do things within the law.

The merging political parties are clearly known because ACN, CPC and ANPP had separate conventions where they agreed to dissolve into APC. We want the APC to pursue politics within the approved decorum; they should know that it is not by force to join a merger.”

Declaring the African People’s Congress’ stand on the lingering struggle for the ownership of the authentic APC acronym, its chairman, Chief Onyinye Ikeagwuonu, said: “As long as our case is in court, the acronym, APC, is not yet available as the process of registration, which ends with a judicial review, is still ongoing.

“Nigerians must note that INEC fully acknowledged that we were the first to apply with the name, APC, and are fully in court with us over our move to upturn the decision to deny us registration.”

According to him, INEC’s decision to go ahead with the registration of the All Progressives Congress was tantamount to a breach of the rule of law.

Claiming that the African People’s Congress fully complied with registration requirements, he wondered what was the rationale behind INEC’s refusal to register the party but rather went ahead to do so for agroup, whose acronym was similar to theirs.

He, therefore, wondered what would become of the registered APC, if the court judgment was delivered in favour of the African People’s Congress.

He said: “What will happen to INEC and the merger parties when the court gives judgment in our favour and reinstates our right over the APC acronym?”

Ikeagwuonu alleged that with the ‘purported’registration of the All Progressives Congress as a political party, it became obvious that Attahiru Jega and his officials at INEC had succeeded in plunging the country’s democratic process into chaos.

On the 2014 Anambra gubernatorial polls, Ikeagwuonu said that following due consultation with the party’s legal team across the country, “we must send out this clear signal that the African People’s Congress is going on with its preparations for the election as we are hopeful of the positive outcome of our action in court and nobody can stop our candidate from participation.”

Fashola Replies Peter Obi Over Alleged Deportation Of Igbos From Lagos

Fashola Replies Peter Obi Over Alleged Deportation Of Igbos From Lagos…Accuses Anambra Gov Of Mischief

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has accused his Anambra state counterpart of trying to politicise last week relocation of some destitutes to Onitsha with a view to making cheap political gains from such in the November 16 governorship election in the south east state.

Fashola who for the first time spoke on the issue while fielding questions from journalists after inspecting some on-going infrastructural projects in the state said “It is unfortunate that my colleague governor has made this a media issue. As I speak, I haven’t received any telephone call or letter from him to complain. And don’t think that is the way government works. On less important matters like this, he had called me before.

“This is a political season and Anambra will be up for contest. And in a political season, unusual things happen and perhaps we are living in an interesting time. And some of the evidence was when one sees two adults kissing on television, it tells you that something is afoot. And it is really important to say that our hospitality in Lagos state is legendary. And it is a global legend that the people of Lagos state are hospitable people. And so is the present government of the state and previous administration”.

“I think that there are large Igbo community in the state. And their presence is evident in Alaba with the Alaba International Market and the ASPAMDA market. And they are doing their business peacefully while the state government is working tirelessly to provide the required transport system, that will help improve the travel time and their businesses.

“There is too much at stake for anyone to begin to insight the Igbo community against their host state. There is too much at stake here. It is a very dangerous and unwarranted precedent. And I hope that common sense will prevail here. Also for those who are praying for blood should know that there is too much at risk here.”

BORNO—Sheikh Abubakar Shekau, leader of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has reportedly been shot and deposed by members of his own sect, Boko Haram.
A new leader, Abu Zamira Mohammed, who is the sect’s leader  negotiating with the federal government has been appointed new leader by the group’s Shura Council.
The group also said that its ceasefire declaration is working, pointing  out that there has not been any suicide bombing since the declaration. It noted its condemnation of the Yobe massacre where 40 students were killed, adding that some politicians now commit murder and ascribe it to Boko Haram

On the Kano blasts last Monday, which led to the death of about 45 people, the group blamed it on  federal government’s tardiness in responding to the ceasefire agreement.
A joint report published yesterday, by Dr. Stephen Davis, a conflict resolution expert and an adviser to the last three Nigerian Presidents and  Phillip van Niekerk, President of Calabar Africa, a strategic advisory company focusing on Africa, and former Editor of South Africa’s Mail & Guardian newspaper, in the US based online newspaper, huffingtonpost.com, quoted one Imam Liman Ibrahim, spiritual leader of Boko Haram, as saying that the change in leadership was prelude to peace negotiations with the federal government.
A faction of Boko Haram has entered into a back-channel dialogue with the government in the search for an elusive peace to a conflict that has seen multiple suicide bombings, attacks on government buildings and churches, and has claimed thousands of lives since 2011.
The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Restoration of Peace in the North-East, Tanimu Turaki, last month announced that his committee had reached an “understanding for ceasefire” with members of the Jama’atu Ahlul Sunnah Lih Da’awa Wal Jihad, JAS, more commonly known as Boko Haram. JAS leadership also nominated five people to enter peace discussions with the Federal Government: Abu Liman Ibrahim, Abu Zamira Mohammed, Abu Adam Maisandari, Kassim Imam Biu and Mallam Modu Damaturu. In its press statement, JAS said the ceasefire would be in effect for 60 days, and that during the period, any attacks in its name or in the name of its leader, Imam Shekau, would be bogus attacks.
Boko Haram has been in preliminary discussions with government emissaries since the organisation declared a ceasefire on June 26. Abu Zamira Mohammed  told the paper that his group was still waiting for the Federal Government’s response to the ceasefire declaration. The contacts are still at an early, fragile stage, and there is no guarantee that the talks will achieve a breakthrough.
The writers said: “It has now come to light that Boko Haram’s leadership sent representatives to the capital Abuja on June 25, 2013 where they revealed to the government that Shekau was no longer their leader.”
Imam Liman Ibrahim, the spiritual leader of Boko Haram, explained that the teaching of Shekau was becoming increasingly harsh and began to depart from the Holy Qu’ran.
“It was harsh, harsh, harsh,” Imam Liman said when explaining the reasons for the change of leadership.
“The beheadings, the killings, the recent death of students … this is not the way of the Holy Qu’ran. We could tolerate it no longer.
“Imam Liman explained that Shekau was given a choice of joining the peace dialogue with the Nigerian government, forming his own sect or being killed. Several senior Boko Haram commanders including Shekau’s Chief of Security and personal bodyguard, Abdullahi Hassan, have claimed that Shekau has since been shot in the lower leg, thigh and shoulder,” the paper went on.
The report said,” Shekau’s exact fate is not known. A video clip recovered from a Boko Haram camp in the Sambisa Forest Reserve in the northeast Nigeria, raided by the military on May 16, shows Shekau limping, providing confirmation of reports he had been shot.
“However, Shekau has been noticeably absent from recent public statements and is not one of the leaders who have engaged with government emissaries. It had been presumed that Shekau chose to voluntarily leave peace discussions in the hands of Boko Haram’s leadership group,” the duo wrote.
The JAS leadership were quoted as citing the Qu’ran as their inspiration for seeking peace. “In the Holy Qu’ran, Sura At Tauba: Wa-injanahuu-Lisalmi Faji Nahlahaa, we are encouraged to seek peace. The Holy Qu’ran also tells us it is good to negotiate. Sura At Nisa Ayih: Wa-sulhu Haira.”
In June, the Boko Haram leadership demanded that women held by the military under the state of the emergency in the north be released. President Jonathan authorised the release, which opened the door to the ceasefire and the peace dialogue.
The report also said “the Boko Haram leadership has appointed Abubakar Babasani Ibn Yusuf as spokesman to replace Zamirah. Babasani says the leadership has been consulting all senior commanders to assure compliance with the ceasefire. He said commanders as far afield as Niger, Chad, Sudan and Cameroon have agreed to the ceasefire and discussions with the Nigerian government on the subject of a peace deal.”
The June 26 ceasefire announcement has been accompanied by an absence of suicide bombings, giving credibility to the new leadership and their intention of signing a peace accord. However, the administration’s tardiness in responding to the group’s ceasefire announcement is believed to have precipitated three car bomb attacks in the northern city of Kano this week that left at least 15 people dead.
Other attacks have persisted including the recent horrific killings of students in Yobe where about 40 students were incinerated in their school building. The latest Boko Haram statement is highly critical of the Yobe deaths and denies responsibility for the attacks.
The leadership blames such atrocities on politicians in the northeast whom they accuse of arming gangs and committing crimes in the name of Boko Haram.
Shekau was deputy leader under Boko Haram founder Imam Mohammed Yusuf who was captured in July 2009 in fighting in the northeast of Nigeria and executed by Nigeria’s Police force in what appears to have been an extrajudicial killing. The interrogation and Yusuf’s bullet-riddled body were filmed on video.
Yusuf’s death radicalized the Boko Haram leaders and led them to move underground and identify more closely with Al Qaeda. Following the founder’s killing, Shekau emerged as the new leader of a revitalised Boko Haram in 2010 and he and other commanders refocused the group towards global jihad.
Shekau launched a series of well-planned assassinations and suicide bombings that targeted Nigerian police headquarters and the UN offices in Abuja among many other locations. Through a series of video appearances on television stations, notably Al Jazeera, Shekau emerged as the face of Boko Haram. Earlier this year, the U.S. placed a $7-million bounty on his head.
The military’s Joint Task Force has recently arrested Alhaji Mala Othman, Chairman of the opposition All Nigeria People’s Party in Borno state, the epicentre of the insurrection, on terrorism charges.
“Jonathan declared a state of emergency on May 14 and launched a military offensive that has seen some successes. But reprisal attacks by Boko Haram, including the freeing of 105 of their members from prison, indicate that without a peace deal, Boko Haram has the resources to continue the fight,” the duo wrote.
