Calf Born With 8 Legs, 4 Ears, 2 Bodies And 1 Head!

Birth defects in cattle aren't all that uncommon, but holy cow was this one strange.

A veterinarian in New Zealand thought the animal was "pretty unusual," which is quite an understatement considering that the deformed calf had two bodies, four ears, and eight legs.

The New Zealand dairy farmer Neil Davy, who delivered the stillborn calf on Monday, told the website NZ Farmer that if he hadn't been there, the mother cow would have surely died.

Davy told the site that he'd originally thought he was delivering twins. Close enough: identical twins come from one egg that divides, and veterinarian Jonathan Spencer told NZ Farmer that Davy's calf "[seems] like an incomplete divide of an egg." Other odd deformities have been known to occur in cattle. In 2012, a calf with an extra pair of legs was born in Switzerland. Although vets didn't initially think the six-legged cow had much chance of survival, the calf seemed to be doing just fine at two months old. In January 2011, a two-headed cow was born in Georgia. The farmer said that the animal ate with both heads.

Mrs Atemkeng accompanied by her 70-year-old mother, Anastasia Fambong, was said to have bought the baby boy from a matron of a clinic in Delta State into whose account she paid the N1.2 million.

He said: “The lady came from Cameron on Friday without any sign of pregnancy but this morning (Wednesday) she was found to be carrying a baby and when my men examined her there were no signs that she just gave birth, so she and the baby were  apprehended.”
According to Igoche, the lady also claimed that in May last year, she was given some herbs at Okigwe where she “miraculously gave birth to a baby girl who is now in Cameroon.”
However, the lady who said she is a teacher in the North-West region of Cameron told Vanguard that she gave birth to the baby and that N1.2 million she paid into the account of the matron was for delivery and herbs she gave to her to aid delivery.
She said: “She (matron) said my breast would start producing milk in three weeks but for now the baby is taking baby food.”
According to her, she does not have anybody in Cameroon to take care of her, that was why she came to Nigeria to deliver before returning to her country.
“I am married and my husband is in Cameroon but there is nobody to take care of me in Cameroon, that was why I came to Nigeria to deliver,” she said.
The Anti Human Trafficking Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service at the Calabar Port, Mrs Agbor Ojong Ogar,  said she took time to examine the woman and she does not have any  sign that she just gave birth.
She said: “The woman passed here on Friday, she left on Saturday and returned to Calabar  on Tuesday and was heading back to Cameron with a baby and when we examined her she does not have any sign of  having given birth recently.”

The incident happened in Okom Ita, Akamkpa Local Government Area, Cross River State, when the two-year old girl  (name withehld)  strolled from her mother’s room  into  Bashiru’s apartment to play with the man she calls “uncle.”
Margaret, the toddler’s mother who narrated the incident to Vanguard said she did  not stop her daughter from going into Bashiru’s room because she considered him a neighbour  who could not harm her daughter.
She said: “We have been living together for some time and now, so when my daughter went into his room I did not stop her even when she later  came out and complained that she was having pains in her private part. I thought it was ordinary pain until in the evening when I wanted to bath her and she began to cry when soap touched her private part.”
Margaret said when she reported the incident to the police, Basiru  was arrested  and taken to the Akamkpa police station .
Mr Hogan Bassey, the Cross River State Police Command spokesman confirmed the arrest of the man and said the matter was under investigation.

Lagos govt rescues 25 children from alleged child trafficker

LAGOS — Eighteen years after it was established, an illegal orphanage home in the heart of Egbeda in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, was shut down by Lagos State government officials who also rescued 25 children from the facility.
The Office of the Public Defender, OPD, an arm of the state Ministry of Justice, which carried out the rescue mission from the purported ‘Home for Orphans and Less Privileged’ said apart from keeping the children illegally, the venue was also used for child trafficking.

A statement from the OPD said the children whose ages range between three months and 12 years were found in the illegal home located at 30/32, Abiodun Adebanbo Street, Egbeda, Lagos allegedly run by one Mrs. Rosemary Nwachukwu.
The OPD disclosed that a combined team of Director of Child Development in the state Ministry of Youths and Social Development, Mrs. Alaba Fadairo and officers from OPD clamped down on the home based on information, from which the alleged illegal activities of the home and the deteriorating condition to which the children were subjected to were exposed.
The rescued children who had since been taken to the Lagos State Government welfare institution for proper care and protection are made up of three infants who are aged between 3 and 6 months and 22 others.
Whereabouts of two children unknown
OPD said: “Upon investigations, it was discovered that Mrs. Nwachukwu trafficked 27 children kept in a room, using them to raise money and defraud innocent members of the public who may need assistance in child adoption. Twenty five children were rescued and the whereabouts of the remaining two children remain unknown.
“Investigation also shows that there were no record on each of the children and no evidence of how the children got to her and no form of police or security report.”

Asking Lagos residents to help the government in curbing such activities in the state, Mrs Fadairo, the leader of the operation, however, warned members of the public to be vigilant and report such cases to the media or government in order not to fall into the hands of similar organisations.
She said people/organisations that operate unapproved or illegal orphanages would be arrested and prosecuted.
The suspect, Mrs. Nwachukwu, in an interview told the officials that she had been running the home for the past 18 years purely on charity but residents and landlord association in the community said they were not aware that such home existed, adding that the children might have been brought by the woman under the cover of darkness.

Anambra guber: Soludo in court over disqualification

ABUJA — Determined to participate in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Anambra State, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, yesterday, went before an Abuja High Court to challenge his disqualification by All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
The erstwhile CBN boss, in his motion, applied for a judicial review of his disqualification by the screening committee that was set up by APGA to ascertain the suitability of candidates that applied to fly its flag in the coming election.
He is praying the court to set aside the decision of the committee denying him the opportunity to vie for the Anambra Governorship seat on APGA platform.
Justice Peter Affen, yesterday, overruled the oral submission of Ezechukwu that the matter can be entertained in the Federal Capital Territory, being the headquarters of the party.
He  ordered him to file further affidavits citing authorities of cases heard outside the jurisdiction of the cause of action and adjourned till today.
It will be recalled that APGA’s screening panel had on August 16, disqualified Soludo and five other aspirants from contesting the November 16 governorship election in the state.

ASUU Withdraw From Negotiation With Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday announced its disengagement from further negotiations with the Federal Government, over what it describes as the latter’s perceived insincerity in the 2009 agreement as well as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) both parties signed in January last year.

The union National President, Dr. Nassir Faggae Isa, said at a press briefing held at the University of Lagos on Thursday that the 2009 agreement and the MoU must first be honoured, even if ASUU feels the need to consider renegotiation with the government.

The union had embarked on a total strike on July 2 over government‘s failure to honour the 2009 agreement.

Faggae said, “Consequently, our members are left with no other choice than to prosecute this strike to its logical conclusion. ASUU members nationwide are saying this striker will not be suspended until and unless the government respects the 2009 agreement and makes concrete efforts to implement it in the best interest of the country.”

According to him, during a meeting held between ASUU and the government representative on Monday, government declared that it neither had any motive to revitalize public universities through committed funding, nor was it ready to pay in full the accumulated Earned Academic Allowances between 2009 and 2013.

Wentworth Miller 'Michael Scofield' Is Gay

Wentworth Miller has come out as gay.
The Prison Break star decided it was time to publicly reveal his sexuality after being invited to attend a film festival in Russia.
"Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes," Wentworth, 41, says in a letter to Maria Averbakh, director of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. "However, as a gay man, I must decline.
"I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," he continued in the letter, posted on GLAAD's website. "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

He also said "if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice."
GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz praised Miller's actions.

"Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians: you are not alone," Cruz said. "As people from across the globe continue to speak out against this horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia's anti-LGBT law."

Implemented last month, a controversial new law has banned "propaganda of nontraditional intimate relations around minors," including the public discussion of gay rights and relationships anywhere children might hear it. The law has been condemned by Russian and international human rights groups as highly discriminatory.

The anti-gay propaganda law quickly stirred up controversy, with people calling for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia to gay bars in Los Angeles and New York holding "vodka-dumping" protests.

Man Sets Mum On Fire In Lagos

The Police in Lagos, yesterday, said they were on the trail of a man who allegedly burnt his 87-year-old mother to death in their Adekunle Yaba residence in Lagos.

The fleeing assailant, 45-year-old Bamidele Bakare, was alleged to have set the building located on 16, Ishola Street ablaze in the early hours of Monday.

Eye witnesses said before the building was set ablaze, Bamidele evacuated his five children and property from one of the rooms he occupied.

While the building comprising eight rooms was on fire, occupants who were jolted from sleep reportedly scrambled out of their respective apartments for safety.

Two of them who attempted to rescue the octogenarian identified as Folorunsho Bakare who was fast asleep were reportedly prevented by Bamidele, whom they alleged threatened to set them ablaze too if they dared.

Elder brother to the alleged assailant, Mr Olu Bakare, who reportedly rushed down from Jos, the Plateau State capital where he resides, expressed shock that his sibling could send their mother to her grave in such manner.

He told Vanguard yesterday: “As if the death of our mother was not enough, my brother buried her charred remains without my consent.”

Bakare said the burnt building was owned by him, adding that things fell apart between him and his younger brother after the latter allegedly stole documents of some of his property located in Jos and Lagos.

Bakare said: “I took him to court and that was the beginning of his rift with me. I believe he set my mother on fire because of that. But what has that got to do with my 87-year-old mother?

“When I heard the news, I took the next available vehicle to Lagos. I reported the matter to the Adekunle Police division, from where the Divisional Crime Officer and Inspector Crime followed me to ascertain the claim.

“I was also asked to get two persons who saw when he was setting the building ablaze. I did and they attested to it.

“They said when they wanted to rescue my mother, Bamidele told them to leave her to die, saying after all, she was his mother and that he was capable of burying her. After setting the building ablaze, he disappeared with his children.”

However, police sources said efforts were on to arrest fleeing Bamidele.

Horned Sea Monster Washed Ashore In Spain

A sea creature was on thursday discovered along the coastline of Luis Siret Beach in Villaricos, Spain. It featured what appears to be horns on its head. It was discovered in the advanced stages of decomposition.

A woman first discovered the head and then found the body farther down the beach, according to ThinkSpain.com. The entire carcass with the head stretched 13 feet.

“A lady found one part and we helped her retrieve the rest,” said Maria Sanches of Civil Protection in Cuevas. “We have no idea what it was. It really stank.”

The find caused widespread speculation as to what it could be, some humorously suggesting it was a link to the Loch Ness Monster or was some sort of sea dragon or water dinosaur. Others surmised it was a mutant fish or some sort of shark species. The best guess here is an oarfish.

“It’s hard to know what we’re dealing with,” A PROMAR (Programa en Defensa de la Fauna Marina-Sea Life Defense Program) spokesman Paco Toledano told Ideal.es Ameria, according to Inexplicata. “It’s very decomposed and we cannot identify what it is.

“Perhaps we could learn something more from the bones, but to be precise, it would be necessary to perform a genetic analysis, which is very expensive and who would pay for it?

“Anyway, we have submitted the information to colleagues with more experience and knowledge to see if they can tell us something more specific.”

Toledano did shed some light on the horns of the sea creature, however. He said they are actually bones that have fallen out of place.

“It’s not a longhorn cowfish, that’s for sure,” he joked.

Gunmen Kill Eight Traders In Enugu Market

No fewer than eight persons have been reported dead after unknown gunmen opened fire on traders at Abakpa Nike in Enugu State.

The incident happened around 5 p.m at Ogwuagor Market, popularly known as Ahia 4, in Abakpa suburb.

An eye witness told DailyPost that the hoodlums stormed the market in a commando-like style and shot traders on target.

The trader, who said he escaped death by the whiskers, lamented that his colleague died during the attack.

“I was discussing with my neighbour, a cobbler, when suddenly we heard gun shots, I quickly ran into my shop; after the gun shot had stopped, I came out and saw my friend lying lifeless in the pool of his blood.

“Apart from him, I also counted two other dead bodies within our axis, a young lady and a married woman.

“Other persons were also killed in different axis of the market”, said a market source.

Another eye witness also told DailyPost that a woman who was driving to the market was shot inside her vehicle.

The Enugu State Police, however, put the number of the dead at two, and casualty figure at five.

In a press statement made available to DailyPost by the spokesman of the command, Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, he said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Amaraizu confirmed the gunfire but said two persons died, while five were injured.

According to him, “The arrested persons are Peter Nwankwo, Udeh Chimezie, Osita Onyia and one Chief Frank Eze.

“One Sunday Eze and Nebechi Mba reported dead have been deposited at the mortuary of the Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu while the injured namely Uwadiegwu Onyegwu, Anayo Ifeji, Ani Basil, Hycienth Ugwu and Ozioma Ezekwem are also receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.

“Investigations into the incident have commenced in full scale to ascertain the root cause and those arrested are now helping the police in their investigation”.

“The state commissioner of police Abubakar Adamu Mohammed has urged members of the public to be law abiding and go about their lawful businesses as security have been beefed up in the area to forestall further breakdown of law and order in the area”, Amaraizu added.

Kano To Include Christians In Mass Weddings.

Kano — The Kano State Hisbah Board says it has commenced preparations to marry off another set of 1,111 women in the fourth batch of its mass marriage program aimed at reducing the number of unmarried women in the state.

Commandant General of the board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, at a press conference in Kano yesterday said the mass wedding of the women, including divorces, widows and spinsters will take place soon.

"The government introduced this plan in order to reduce marital problems in our society. When we first suggested the mass wedding plan, many people thought it would not be possible, but Alhamdulillah, we have succeeded in marrying off about 1350 women in three batches", he said.

Daurawa said Christians in the state will now be allowed to participate in the exercise to disengage them from prostitution.

"We decided to include Christians in the state since we are living together in the same environment. And just as we do not want to see our children engage in prostitution, we also do not want theirs to engage in it. We gave them 50 slots from the total number we are going to marry off. And we will allow them to go and do the wedding in their churches. We will only share the marriage bouquet (walima) together," he said.

Daurawa said registration for the exercise will now be done online, and that the board has been equipped with machines to determine the health status of the grooms and brides.

"You know last time we had a bad experience where a woman deceived us by bringing the sample of her sister's urine as hers, it was after the marriage we discovered that she was six months pregnant. So, in order to prevent such cases, we have provided a scanner which has the capacity to capture even a day old pregnancy," he said.

Gay Guy Beaten & Arrested In Ogun State

The incident happened at 1 Kotodayo in the Iyana-Iyesi area of Ota after Sadiq’s friend, Ibrahim (surname withheld), allegedly raised the alarm declaring that his male organ had disappeared.
According to Ibrahim, who was seen Unclad before some men, Sadiq had paid him a visit last night and deep into the night, he began to have s*x with him.

When P.M.NEWS visited the scene, Ibrahim’s joystick was of normal size, but he was making efforts to make it turgid as a proof that it was fully restored.

Ibrahim, who is also a squatter in the house, alleged that it was the first time Sadiq would be visiting him. Though they have been friends for some time now, Ibrahim said he never knew his friend was gay until last night.

Sadiq, in a confessional statement to local vigilantes at the scene of the incident, said he has been homosexual for the past three years.

He denied snatching his friend’s male organ, but said he had engaged only men in sex since then and further indicted a prophet whose white garment church is within the community as the one who prepared the concoction with which he engages in the act.

However, the prophet, who was invited by the vigilantes, denied the allegation.

He said he had known Sadiq as one who never chased after women and did not know that the man was gay.

Neighbours said that the owner of the one-room apartment where the incident occurred lives and works in Lagos and only visits the place at weekends.

Sadiq was later whisked away by the vigilantes after much plea to stop beating him was rebuffed by the people of the area.

Nigeria is not in support of gay practice no wonder a bill has been approved setting 14-year-jail term for offenders.

We want implementation, not palliatives – ASUU

ABUJA — Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, said that the only thing that would make its striking members go back to the classrooms is the full implementation of the 2009 agreement and not any new offer or palliatives from the Federal Government.
President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who stated this in a telephone interview with Vanguard in Abuja, said it was better to get it right once and for all instead of palliative measures that would not help the system compete with other universities in the world.
Fagge said that government had established the attitude of making promises without fulfilling them and that until the 2009 agreement was implemented, universities will remain closed.
Beyond offers
He said: “The problem is that we have gone beyond the point of making offers now. We have a comprehensive agreement, which was arrived at after three years of negotiation from 2006.
“We had demands from both sides— ASUU and government— and like I said earlier, we reduced those two demands into an agreement within three years of negotiations.
“And at this point, we are talking of the implementation of the agreement. So, at this point, government should not be talking or making offers. If government wasn’t ready to implement the agreement, government shouldn’t have signed the agreement.
ASUU-strike-Cartoon
‘Gov’s antics’
“What is becoming clear to us is that government is still going back to its usual antics. We signed an agreement.
“Government will just single out what affects the staff directly to implement and then expect them to go back and continue the deception in the system.
“Without good research, teaching and effective delivery of production of knowledge, universities cannot move and this is why the nation has been blaming us for the kind of students we are graduating in our universities.
“So what we are saying is that we are also tired of this. What we want is let the agreement be implemented and then we look at the impact of the implementation.
“Then if there is the need for us to review the situation, we will do it through another round of negotiations. But at this point, we are not talking about making offers. Government made offers on negotiation table between 2006 and 2009.”
Gov Aliyu denies report
Meanwhile, Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, yesterday, denied a media report that quoted him as saying that the team of negotiators on the side of the Federal Government in the ongoing talks with ASUU was incompetent.
A national daily (not Vanguard) had in a report, yesterday, quoted Aliyu as “doubting the abilities of the negotiators on the side of the Federal Government to achieve any breakthrough in the ongoing dialogue with the lecturers”
Governor Aliyu’s spokesman, Danladi Ndayebo, described the story as untrue, urging the reading public to disregard the report.
He said the report was misleading and did not reflect Governor Aliyu’s comments at the National Universities Commission, NUC, in Abuja, where the governor addressed a continental workshop on the 3rd Regional Centre of Expertise, RCE.
‘What he said’
Ndayebo said: “What Governor Aliyu said is that Federal Government can afford to offer free basic and senior secondary education, while heavily subsidising tertiary education if government officials cut down on spending public funds unnecessarily.
“Governor Aliyu then encouraged constant dialogue between labour unions and government, stressing that strikes were unheard of in other West African countries because there was constant dialogue between the unions and government.”

Court dissolves 19 year-old marriage over non payment of bride price

Ikole (Ekiti) – An Ikole-Ekiti Customary Court on Thursday dissolved a 19 year-old marriage between Olawale and Mary Adeniyi over the inability of the husband to pay the bride price.
Mary had on July 27, 2012 dragged her husband before the court for failing to pay her pride price.
She also accused her husband of lack of  care for the family, constant fighting and threat to her life.
Mary, who has now re-married and known as Mrs Oguntuase, told the court that the union between her former husband was a mere association and was blessed with three children.
She accused her former husband of chasing their eldest child with a cutlass when the child demanded for her school fees from him.
Adeniyi denied all the allegations levelled against him, saying that the plaintiff had always sought for an excuse to leave him despite all he had done for her.
The President of the court, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, dissolved the union and directed the two parties to be jointly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the three children. (NAN)

Nigerian students spend N100bn on tuition in Ghanaian varsities

MAKURDI—Over 200,000 Nigerian students studying in Ghanaian universities are reported to expend over N100 billion annually as tuition outside sundry fees.
Former lawmaker and educationists, Senator David Iornem, who disclosed this yesterday at a briefing to mark his 64th birthday anniversary in Makurdi, said the figure represented a major capital flight from the country.
According to him, “available figures show that the over 200,000 Nigerians currently studying in Ghana, expend over N100 billion annually on tuition and sundry fees. This situation arose because official figures show that out of N1.7million Nigerians seeking admission into institutions of higher learning, only 500,000 find placements leaving many with no other option but to seek admission in Ghana.
The federal government should take immediate steps to unbundling the higher education sector in Nigeria by adopting the United Kingdom, American, Malaysian and German models which allows for the establishment of small university colleges by willing entrepreneurs.
“In these countries, small university colleges which may be affiliated to bigger universities are set up by small scale entrepreneurs with adequate resources. I believe that when we kick start this process, more than 500,000 university places will be created in the first year.
“This can be achieved by involving small entrepreneurs and allowing existing universities to set up satellite campuses. By the third year of starting this system, no Nigerian youth wanting to enter a university, polytechnic or a college of education will have any difficulty or denied the opportunity to development him or herself.
Prof. Iornem added, “it is totally unacceptable to officially shut the door against young Nigerians wanting admission, thereby, leaving them stranded and hopeless; we must return the higher education sector to its days of glory when brilliant young people were sure of their future.”

APC unveils programmes, endorses Ngige as candidate for Anambra guber poll

ABUJA—All Progressives Party, declared Wednesday, that a large part of its agenda will focus on the Nigerian youth with particular attention to education, job creation, entrepreneurship skills, and vocational training.
National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande disclosed this at a press conference addressed by the leaders of the party.
Chief Bisi Akande said, “It is common knowledge that Nigeria’s current population is now constituted in such a manner that if not carefully handled would, pose the biggest challenge that this country has ever confronted. According to many reliable reports, nearly two thirds of the over 160 million citizens of Nigeria are youth, meaning; people below the age of 35 years.
“Unfortunately, the process of governance in Nigeria, for all practical purposes, remains impervious to the aspirations of this category of Nigerians. Consequently, no priority is assigned to education, job creation, entrepreneurship skills, and vocational training that would have turned our youth into truly productive citizens. We in the APC see engagement with the youth on the above as a strategic imperative.”

He further stated that APC would also pay attention to the question of gender in-balance in governance and in the development processes in general. According to him: “The female members of our society constitute about half our country’s population. Yet women issues have been largely consigned to the back burners of governance. For the APC, the specific aspirations of women constitute a major ideological platform. Our party would not resort to the usual tokenism and sloganeering where the issue of women aspirations are concerned, but through this ideological platform transform itself into a party of true gender balance.”
Akande declared that the purpose of the party’s meeting which held earlier in the day was to sound out its members on the immediate areas of responsibility of the Interim Executive Committee, IEC, adding that the responsibility of the IEC was limited to mobilisation of “our teeming adherents and supporters for membership registration and conduct of congresses that will lead to producing a leadership that will be able to lead the party into 2015 general elections”.
He said: Added to these are countless incidents of religious, ethnic, political and civil unrests leading to the loss of millions of innocent lives. Trapped in a vicious cycle of political crises, social upheavals and economic under-development, Nigeria has become, not only one of the most unstable countries in the world, it is also, regrettably, one of the poorest despite its huge human and material resource endowments. Confronting these issues in a single minded manner is the raison de’tre for the formation of the APC.”
Akande further said that he remained confident that with the support and commitment of the party’s members, success was assured in APC’s efforts to deliver better governance to Nigerians
Meanwhile, former Governor of Anambra State Senator Chris Ngige is set to pick the ticket of the newly registered APC in next November’s governorship polls in the state.
This was disclosed by Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha when he announced that Ngige’s arch rival for the party’s ticket, Senator Annie Okonkwo had stepped down for the former governor.

Enugu ready to welcome the world – Gov. Chime

AT the Lion Building, Enugu, the official quarters of the Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Iheanacho Chime, was attending to hordes of guests – politicians, government officials and others with sundry interests.
Close to midnight on Monday, he granted Vanguard audience on the prospects that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport that would operate international flights from tomorrow hold for the city, State and the entire South East zone.
In tracing the journey that resulted in the airport, he was generous with credits to several parties.
According to him, Dr. Akanu Ibiam, after whom the airport is named, deserved the honour. “He was the Governor of Eastern Region. In terms of the contributions to the development of the Region, I would rate him along with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dr. Michael Okpara. He is one of the least honoured of our past leaders and I know that many share my joy over this honour that has been bestowed on him,” Chime said.

He also spoke about the contributions that the Enugu State Government has made in ensuring that the airport met the expectations of the users of the facility. “Enugu is ready to welcome the world,” he said. Though he was referring to the official opening tomorrow, hours before the interview, businessman Arthur Eze terminated his flight from Dakar, Senegal in Enugu.
His was not the first international flight to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. A Ghanaian government delegation to Anambra State landed there last June. Formally, an Ethiopian Airlines flight would operate from Enugu tomorrow – landing there about 1pm and taking off to Addis Ababa – and be recognised as the inaugural international flight from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
Governor Chime was being modest, about Enugu’s readiness. The 101-year-old city that received His Imperial Majesty Emperor Ras Tafari Makonnen Woldemikael Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia in 1972, has just become readier to welcome the world, with an Ethiopian connection, 41 years after the Lion of Judah, as he was broadly known and called.
How journey began: President Yar’Adua had pronounced the international status of the airport. Not much happened after that, but it was an important recognition. It was under President Goodluck Jonathan that the major works started. It began with the closure of the airport to permit the extension and widening of the runways for bigger planes. A new apron was also approved.  The Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, gave the project a tremendous push. She is doing a great job, not only with Enugu, the changes in airports round the country testify to her efforts.
The President flagged off the construction of the international wing last March. We are witnessing the fulfilment of the promise that the President made to the South East to deliver an international airport to it. I am happy that that has been done and I ask our people to join us in thanking the President for keeping his word.
South East Governors’ contributions: All the governors from the South East played an important part in this project. As a group, we made it a point to sustain the pressure by reminding the President about the project. It was one of the important projects that we kept asking the President to ensure that the people of South East got. The others are the Second Niger Bridge and the federal roads in the zone.
Impact of the airport
We spoke as one voice in the South East Governors Forum in this matter and I thank my brother governors for supporting the project. I believe there were others, some unknown, whose kind words could have facilitated the realisation of this project. Our gratitude goes to all of them.
How would airport help Enugu: The impact of the airport would not be limited to Enugu State. It would impact on businesses in the South East and beyond. Travellers and business people that find the airport in Enugu nearer to them would use it. So we are in a situation where people in Delta, other South South States and the North Central would use the airport.
We are confident that the impact would be great. The airport would facilitate businesses and we expect that as it grows and schedules include other parts of the world, Enugu would be the major hub in this part of the country with a spread of services that would benefit others.
The impact of an airport, therefore, cannot be limited, the uses that result from its presence would show and soon the impact would be obvious with the attendant multiplier effects of having such an important facility here.
Security  Issues
Enugu is rated the safest State in Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar said so. We are still improving our security. People arriving Enugu for business or pleasure should harbour no fears.
We are assisting the police in the construction of facilities for their air wing at the airport. It was one of the issues we settled with the Inspector General of Police during a visit to Enugu. The facility would be in use before the end of the year. It would be used for air surveillance of the South East zone.
Contributions of Enugu Government
We did not make any financial contributions to the project. However, we have constructed new roads to decongest traffic to the airport. The roads are part of the on-going road projects to improve traffic management throughout the State.
His Message:We look forward to welcoming you in Enugu. Come to Enugu and benefit from the improvements we have made throughout our State. Enugu is ready to welcome the world.

First Liver Surgery With Tablet Computer In Germany Photo

The following are images from Germany of a liver surgery, one of the first surgeries of its kind in the country with the support of a tablet computer to access and visualize planning data. The tablet uses augmented reality, which allows the liver to be filmed with an iPad and overlaid during an operation with virtual 3D models reconstructed from the real organ.

Developed by Fraunhofer MEVIS in Bremen, this procedure helps locate critical structures such as tumors and vessels and is expected to improve the quality of transferring pre operational resection plans into actual surgery.

ASUU STRIKE: Business owners count losses, as group appeals to ASUU, FG

The current indefinite industrial action embarked by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has started taking its toll on persons that carry out their legitimate businesses in and around university campuses in Imo State.
Vanguard investigations in Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Imo State University, Owerri, revealed that most proprietors of the businesses have either closed shop or downsized their workforce, following their sagging income.
As at the last count, hair dressing salons, computer operators, recharge card hawkers, stationery dealers, restaurant owners and others are counting their losses as a result of non-patronage from mainly students.
Meanwhile, the national leadership of ASUU and the Federal Government have been urged to consider the plight of Nigerian undergraduates and allow immediate resumption of studies in their various institutions.
Members of the University of Jos Alumni Association, UJAA, South East Zone, made the passionate appeal in a communique issued at the end of their quarterly meeting and signed by the Zonal Coordinator, Sir Ned Ulelu.
“We passionately appeal to the national leadership of ASUU and the Federal Government to come to terms and end the current industrial action that has truncated academic activities in the nation’s universities for several weeks”, UJAA pleaded.

Syria opposition accuses regime of chemical attack, says 1,300 dead

BEIRUT (AFP) – Syria’s main opposition group accused the regime of “massacring” more than 1,300 people in a chemical weapons attack Wednesday on rebel areas near Damascus, saying many of the victims choked to death.
Videos distributed by activists, the authenticity of which could not immediately be verified, showed medics attending to suffocating children and hospitals being overwhelmed.
More footage showed dozens of people laid out on the ground, among them many children, some of them covered in white sheets.
The claim of a chemical attack, which could not be independently verified, was vehemently denied by the Syrian regime which said it was intended to hinder the mission of UN chemical weapons inspectors now in the country.
The Local Coordination Committees (LCC), a network of activists, reported hundreds of casualties in the “brutal use of toxic gas by the criminal regime”.
And in videos posted on YouTube, the Syrian Revolution General Commission, another activist group, showed what it called “a terrible massacre committed by regime forces with toxic gas.”
The attack “led to suffocation of the children and overcrowding field hospitals with hundreds of casualties amid extreme shortage of medical supplies to rescue the victims, particularly Atropine,” the LCC said.
Eastern Ghouta “was also shelled by warplanes following the chemical attack that is still ongoing, which led to hundreds of casualties and victims, among them entire families,” it said.
In one video, children are seen being given first aid in a field hospital, notably oxygen to help them breathe. Doctors appear to be trying to resuscitate unconscious children.
“Genocide! Genocide in the town of Moadamiyet al-Sham (southwest of Damascus) using chemical weapons,” cries the man behind the camera.
His voice trembling with fear, he adds: “Where are my parents? Where is my father? My mother?”
“People working in the field hospital are overwhelmed and unable to do anything for the wounded. There is a severe lack of medicines. The wounded are being treated using just water and onions,” Abu Jihad, an activist in Irbin, told AFP via the Internet.
“This regime considers children in liberated areas to be its enemies,” Eastern Ghouta-based Abu Nadim said via the Internet.
The opposition National Coalition’s George Sabra, who spoke to reporters in Istanbul, gave a toll of more than 1,300 people dead in what he said was a “coup de grace that kills all hopes for a political solution in Syria”.
“The Syrian regime is mocking the UN and the great powers when it strikes targets near Damascus, while the (UN weapons inspectors) are just a few steps away,” he added.
The Coalition called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, earlier said at least 100 people were killed in air raids and shelling that struck several rebel areas east and southwest of Damascus.
“This figure will surely go up. The raids and bombardment are continuing,” said the Observatory.
The heavy bombing could be heard in the capital itself, where a grey cloud capped the sky.
It did not comment on the allegations that the army had used chemical arms in its assault on the densely populated Ghouta suburbs, where rebels have been holding out against government forces.
State news agency Sana said “reports on the use of chemical weapons in Ghouta are totally false. It’s an attempt to prevent the UN commission of inquiry from carrying out its mission.”
The agency described Wednesday’s violence as “a series of operations” by army units “against terrorist groups” in Jobar, Irbin and Zamalka, “killing a number of them and destroying their hideouts”.
In a statement, the army flatly denied as “null, void and totally unfounded” the opposition’s allegations, describing them as a “desperate bid to conceal their failures on the battlefield”.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said his country will refer the charges of a chemical weapons strike to the Security Council.
He was “deeply concerned” by the reports and said if they were proved they would mark a “shocking escalation” in the 29-month civil war.
The Arab League urged the UN inspectors to visit the site immediately “to see the reality of the situation and investigate the circumstances of this crime.”
UN chief Ban Ki-moon insisted Monday that the inspectors be granted unrestricted access to Syrian sites.
“In order to credibly establish the facts, the mission must have full access to the sites of the alleged incidents,” the secretary general said.
Al-Watan newspaper said the government had “pledged to cooperate and facilitate the work” the UN inspectors, who launched their mission Tuesday.
There have frequent claims by anti-regime activists of the alleged use of chemical weapons by the army, particularly in Damascus province and Homs in central Syria.
Claims have also emerged from Idlib in the northwest, while the army and rebels have exchanged blame over the alleged use of chemical arms in a March attack in Khan al-Assal in the northern province of Aleppo.
The claims of a chemical weapons strike come a year after US President Barack Obama said Washington would regard any recourse by Damascus to its chemical weapons arsenal as crossing a “red line”.
