Abuja- A recently-formed coalition of Nigeria’s opposition parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is confident of unseating President Goodluck Jonathan and ending the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the elections scheduled for 2015.
Senior officials said the re-election of Rotimi Ameachi as Chairman of the National Governors Forum (NGF) was among a series of surprises that will 'shock' Jonathan ahead of and beyond the election.
Governor of River State, Ameichi, who has been suspended by the ruling party, is opposed to Jonathan standing for re-election.
“If one look at the actions of the progressives, one will notice that we have been consistent for quite some time.
"With the cooperation of the progressive governors, Amaechi disgraced Jonathan, by winning the NGF election despite the federal might that was against him. Let it be clear to Nigerians that what happened at the NGF election is a dress rehearsal for 2015,” said APC spokesman Rotimi Fashakin.
He pledged the party’s support of Amaechi.
“The progressive parties will always do anything that will stop Jonathan from assuming an imperial status. We will continue to oppose Jonathan’s authoritarian tendencies.
"We support Amaechi because Jonathan’s intervention in the governors’ forum election was self-serving. As a progressive opposition party, our duty is to oppose that. So, we have no apology for that,” added Fashakin.
Formed in February this year, APC is the result of an alliance by Nigeria's four biggest opposition parties - the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
