CBN freezes Boko Haram accounts

Lagos - The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered all banks in the country to freeze accounts traceable to members of local terrorist sect, the Boko Haram.

CBN directed banks to check their databases and annual accounts bearing names “Jamaatu Ahis-Sunna Liddaawti Wal Jihad” and “Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan” which are linked to the illegal sect.

The central bank stated this was in line with the government efforts to stem terrorism in the country.

“All banks and other financial institutions (OFIs) are by this letter required to check their database for the names ‘Jamaatu Ahis-Sunna Liddaawti Wal Jihad’ otherwise known as Boko Haram sect and ‘Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan’ as well as their associates and to report the same to the Central Bank of Nigeria," CBN ordered.

The directive follows rampant terrorist acts by the sect mostly in the northern parts of Africa's most populous nation.

In May, the federal government outlawed the Boko Haram and its activities.
