Imo - The Imo State fears for the safety of the special adviser to Governor Rochas Okorocha.
MacDonald Akano, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Project Monitoring, remains in detention two weeks after unidentified men arrested him. The men are thought to be officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In a statement issued in Owerri by the Commissioner for Information, Strategy, Culture and Tourism, Chinedu Offor, the state government regretted that since Akano’s arrest he has been denied access to medication, family and not been charged in court.
“If Akano has committed any crime, he should be tried. The government is insisting that if there is absolutely no crime established against this top government official of this state, he should be released immediately,”
Offor stated.
“The state government demands that the security officials make themselves and the offences the suspect committed known to the public. The state demands his release as his continued detention amounts to an infringement on his fundamental rights.”
He argued the illegal arrest was a ploy to distract the Imo State government from “delivering dividends of democracy to people of the state.”
Akano is suspected to have been arrested in connection with the N458 million bribery scandal that led to the removal of the former deputy governor, Jude Agbaso, by the state legislature.
